Charlie poked at the fire trying to keep Claire as warm as possible. Suddenly he heard the honking of a boat horn. Charlie picked up a stick that was on fire and he waved it back and fourth frantically. The boat slowly turned and was heading towards the beach. Charlie turned to Claire and he gently shook her.
"Claire…Claire a boat's here! We're going home." He whispered to her.
Her breath came in short little gasps and her body trembled.
"Charlie…I'm going to die…here…and I want…to be buried with my…baby. I…I l…love you." She said.
Charlie gently rubbed his fingers down the side of her face. Her chest stopped moving up and down in the normal manner and her eyes went wide as if they had finally realized the trauma she had gone through over the past two years. Charlie let the tears slide down his face and he closed Claire's eyes. The boat pulled up to the beach and Charlie flagged them down.
"How many of you are there?" A man asked.
"There were 48, but now there is just me." Charlie replied and then explained the plane crash.
The man tossed down a ladder and Charlie slowly grabbed it. Then he let go.
"Do you guys have a shovel?" He asked.
A man tossed down a shovel and Charlie caught it in his hand. He scooped up Claire's body, walked over to Aaron's grave, and dug another one right next to it. He carefully lowered Claire's body into the grave and then he covered it up. With two sticks he made a cross and engraved her name on the cross. Charlie went back to the ship and they were getting ready to leave. Charlie put his foot on the ladder, looked back at the island and the 47 graves, and then got down.
"Hey what are you doing!" A man called down.
Charlie pulled the gun from his back pocket with the one bullet that was left inside of it.
"You can leave now." Charlie said and he walked over to Claire's grave.
He kneeled on the mound of Claire's grave and he cocked the gun. He put the butt of the gun to the side of his head. He heard the people from the boat screaming his name but it didn't matter anymore. Nothing really matters.
"I love you too Claire."
