Author's note: Slightly AU and I ignore the fact the Head Boys and Girls share a common room. As far as I know, Alice Longbottom's maiden name has never been announced. I don't own Harry Potter.
Like Warm Milk
Alice Cooper loved Frank Longbottom, but now, after being told that she was finally going to meet her soon to be mother-in-law, she was tempted to call the wedding off. Frank's Mum was one formidable woman, and according to Frank, first impressions meant everything to his darling Mum.
"I don't want to go home," Lily Evans sleepily complained.
"Why not?" Alice caustically asked her friend.
Alice would never willingly admit it, but she was feeling irrationally angry with her best friend. Alice was almost a hundred percent certain that Lily was not fully awake. How dare Lily fall asleep so easily when Alice was haunted by the terrifying image of Frank's Mum!
Lily grumbled.
"Well, there's no Petunia here and…" Lily's voice trailed off.
"And, what, Lily," Alice asked her friend.
"Don't you dare be upset with me, Mum! Petunia's extremely rotten to me! Well, I…all right I'll tell you. I am going to miss him," Lily mumbled.
Alice barely heard her.
"Can you speak up, Lily?" Alice begged.
She had a feeling that Lily had confessed something and Alice despised the thought of missing out on anything of great importance.
"All right, Mum! Don't get so snippety with me! I know that it sounds impossible but I'll miss him! Does that mean that I actually love the bloke? I don't know but it could and it's James Potter! How could I love him?" Lily wailed.
Alice cackled.
"Oh, be quiet, Mum! I'll marry who I like!" Lily angrily replied.
Alice quickly attempted to muffle her laughter with her pillow.
"That's right! Guess what, Mum?"
"Please stop talking," Alice breathlessly begged with her pillow tightly smushed up against her face. Alice was truly surprised that Lily and she had not yet succeeded in accidentally waking up the other inhabitants of the dormitory.
"Yeah, I'll marry him! I'll marry him right now!"
Alice chortled.
'Oh, Lily,' Alice thought.
"I'm seventeen years old! I'll marry whoever takes my fancy!"
'Who cares about sleeping tonight? Not me,' Alice giddily thought.
"I will marry James Potter!"
Alice quickly peeked at her dismal friend and then at the clock that rested upon her bedside table. It was currently 3:00 A.M.
"I… Mum, I don't think that he knows that I deeply care about him!" Lily unexpectedly wailed.
"Do you really think that three in the morning is the appropriate time to be discussing this?" Alice quietly chortled.
"I know, I know…," Lily muttered.
Alice yawned.
'Must stay awake,' thought Alice.
It would be a shame if she missed out on the rest of this epic performance.
"I'm counting my eggs before they hatch. I understand your point, Mum," Lily groaned.
Alice dropped her pillow and snuggled deeper into her bedding.
"I won't forget…," Lily mumbled.
'Life is good,' Alice sleepily thought.
"Dad, I am going to marry him," Lily absentmindedly replied.
Alice sleepily grinned.
"I know, I know… I haven't bought the milk yet, and so I need to buy the cow… Oh! You are right. It's the other way around! I need to buy the cow and then the milk is practically free!" Lily happily exclaimed.
"Hot milk," Alice nonsensically mumbled and then, finally, she too, was fast asleep in her bed.
