My friends and I had a Harry Potter marathon and I woke up in time for the dragon escape and the idea came to me as the dragon flew through the sky.
Short and a bit angst-y but I gave it a go!
One-Shot!
*I don't know the history on the dragon that was kept in Bellatrix's vault (so I'm sorry if the following is far from the truth) and I don't have much knowledge on dragon training (I haven't read the Fantastic Beasts school book)... but I imagine Newt's methods are very humane.
Tina shouted as loud as she possibly could after her husband. "Newton Artemis Fido Scamander! Get back here this instant! You're not allowed past the gate! Newt!"
But the old wizard was on a mad hobble for past the gate.
She hurried after him. "Newt! Newt-" Her voice caught in her throat at what she saw. "Newt!" she cried hoarsely. "Newt!" She wanted to tell him to get away from the creature but she couldn't find the words.
A large wounded greyish white dragon with chains wrapped around its neck sat just at the ledge of the cliff. From where she stood, it looked solemn and harmless but she knew that was far from the truth.
Newt hobbled his way toward the creature, muttering under his breath. "No, no, no, they swore they wouldn't- would've never let them- inhumane-"
Tina followed but stopped short at his raised hand.
"N-no, stay back. Please, you'll frighten it."
"Then what're you doing?" she hissed in return.
He shook his head and calmed the beast the only way he knew how. "It's been years since I've seen this fellow. Watched him hatch. They promised not to use- to not be barbaric-" He swallowed past the lump forming in his throat. "They promised- I'm sorry," he apologized to the hurting dragon. He knelt beside the creature's muzzle and petted it tenderly. He met the dragon's eyes. "I'm so sorry," and he began to cry.
"I should have never trusted them to-" He cut himself off and sobbed into his free hand. "I'm so sorry, my friend."
The creature looked up at the old man...
Tina held her breath but remained where she was, clutching the fence and praying that her stubborn Newt wouldn't be harmed.
... and seemed to recognize him. A soft noise erupted from the dragon's throat and nudged Newt's hand.
Newt smiled through his sadness for the dragon's past. "I'm so very sorry." He gave one last affectionate pat to the scales of its hide. "Merlin knows how you got free, but you are." He looked at its torn and scarred neck. "You must be wanting these chains off." He stepped back a great distance and rid the dragon from its prison.
The dragon realized its confines were taken off. It spread its wings, preparing to depart, but thankful for the small old man.
Tina found her courage and met Newt, pulling him back toward the gate. "You are absolutely out of your mind," she said more in admiration of his work as oppose to scolding him. She pulled him back further as the dragon stood and took one mighty stroke of its wings, sending it into the air.
A call - a thanks - sounded and Newt shielded his eyes from the sunlight and watched the creature fly off into the distance.
"Goodbye, my friend. Stay safe," he whispered.
Thank you for reading! :)
