"MOM! Ed is hurting me again!" whined Sarah, pulling on her Mothers skirt.
Not again! 12 year old Ed thought to himself. He hadn't even touched his little sister. Hadn't even said a word to her. He had just been sitting on a chair reading a comic book, minding his own business. But as always, Sarah was taking advantage of the fact that their Mother thought Sarah was a perfect little angel and that Ed was a nasty young boy.
It wasn't fair. Ed cared about his little sister so much and would do anything to protect her and she repays him by telling on him for no reason. He didn't understand what he did to deserve this.
"Go to your room or outside, and stop bothering your sister!" Eds mother exclaimed, shoving Ed out the front door.
Ed sighed and sat down on the front porch. He looked around him. The sun was shining on this warm summer day. The clouds were fluffy and a perfect white, and the sky was a baby blue. Ed couldn't help but smile at the beautifulness of it all. Who could stay sad on such a pretty looking day?
A butterfly landed on Eds arm. Ed smiled at the little thing. It appeared to be a monarch.
"Hello little butterfly." Ed chuckled. "How are you on this fine day? I was sad, but the pretty outdoors has made me happy once again."
The butterfly opened and closed its wings.
Ed smiled again. "Be free little butterfly!" he gently poked the butterfly, motivating it to fly away, which it did. He watched it fly away up into the beautiful blue sky. Sometimes, he wished he could fly away like a butterfly from all the yelling and bickering at his house. But then, how could he read his comic books or watch monster movies?
Ed stood up from his front porch and went to his front lawn. He smiled and fell backwards landing on the soft grass. He closed his eyes, and imagined. He imagined he was fighting a gruesome looking monster with a rolling pin. He whacked the evil monster right in the head and made it leave the citizens it was terrifying alone.
He smiled to himself. In his mind, he could be anything.
Ed opened his eyes and sighed. He looked down at himself. He was still just Ed.
"He just won't stop hurting Sarah!" Ed heard his Mother say through the open window. "I dont know what to do with the boy anymore!"
Eds heart felt as if a needle had been poked into it. He never ever hurt Sarah. How could anybody ever say that?
"Move all his things into the basement? Thats not a bad idea! Then he would stay out of our hair!"
Ed felt ashamed for something he hadn't even done.
Eds mother stuck her head out the window. "Ed, you're moving into the basement. Come help us move your things please."
"Yes, Mother."
