To be honest, Rin Matsuoka was never more surprised than when Haruka Nanase called him and asked him to help pick out a new shade of blue for his bedroom.
"What about Makoto?" he asked.
"He's busy."
Rin sighed, trying to fake annoyance, but if he was going to continue this whole honesty thing, he was near ecstatic at having Haru to himself with Mother Hen Makoto poking around, trying to make sure that nobody got closer to Haru than him. Rin was sure that Makoto wasn't aware that he was doing it, but there was definitely some sort of look whenever someone so much as touched Haru.
"Fine," Rin said. "I'll meet you at the store."
"I'm already there."
Rin paused. "Oh," he said. "Well. I'll. Be there in a little bit."
He headed out, ignoring Nitori's questions and having to hold himself back from humming as he left. Instead, he plastered the most severe scowl he could manage on his face and walked as quickly as he possibly could to Haruka Nanase.
He was waiting outside, arms crossed. "Hey," Rin said. "So, you're painting your room?"
"Makoto's going to help," Haru said. Rin winced a little.
"Harsh, to have someone help pick out a color and then don't even let them help with the painting."
"Do you want to help with the painting?"
Rin sucked in his cheeks and didn't answer. "Let's go find a color. I'll find the perfect one."
"I'll find a better one."
Rin paused. He glanced over. "Really?"
Haru stared back.
He took that as a yes and headed over to the paint swatches, grabbing for the blue. He scanned them, ignoring Haru's grabbing one at a time and going over them before putting them back. Wow. Wow, he was efficient. He knew his blue.
"Blue plate," Rin said.
"No," Haru said, glancing at it. "Naval?"
"No."
"It's my room."
"Tantalizing Teal."
Haru just stared at him at that one, and Rin showed him the paint swatch. Then Haru just sort of stared at him again.
"Yeah, you're right," Rin said, putting it back. He scanned the darker shades of blue, trying to find something that was less 'mermaid' and more 'I'm literally obsessed with water.' They reached for the same swatch at the same time.
"Hyper blue," they said in unison. Rin withdrew his hand, and Haru grabbed the swatch, staring at it with an intensity that was hard to find in anyone other than Haruka Nanase.
"I saw it first," Rin said.
"Nope," Haru said. He headed over to the counter and they started mixing his paint. "Why did you come?"
"You… asked me to."
"I didn't think you'd actually come."
"Didn't you want me to come?" Rin asked. He crossed his arms, defensive. "Should I just go back?"
"No," Haru said. Rin paused, and Haru stared straight at him. It was stupid and kind of cliché to think it, but Haru's eyes were a nice shade of blue, too. "I wanted you here. I like it when you're here."
Rin gave a sort of half-grin. "You're fun to beat at everything we do, too."
"I found the blue first."
"You did not."
So, this was requested by someone on Tumblr, who said 'rinharu, shades of blue' and I could've gone the sad route but instead fluff and paint. Which I think is better than sadness.
Either way, it's short, hopefully pretty sweet, hopefully in-character because I always feel a little weird about writing both of these characters, and I hope you enjoyed!
