This is based off of chapter 13 of 'Of Earth and Air'

I own nothing

She turned her head to look down at her toes, knees brought up to her chest. She meant to lay back down and go to sleep, like she had always done on nights like these, but she found herself unable to even move. Heart still racing from his visit and memories now stored in her mind, she got herself to lay down but she couldn't close her eyes. She had this feeling of emptiness inside, numbness that she could not get rid of no matter how much she tried. She looked over at the clock near her, seeing that it said 4:00 am. Not caring about how early it was she decided to throw herself into her work. As she always did whenever she felt this way. With her heart newly broken for the day, she bent her armor on and made her way out the door. She arrived at the police station and sat in her office; not knowing what to do first, she pulled one of the many piles of arrest reports on her desk closer to her and stared at it. Unable to even comprehend what she saw, she could only hear her heart beating out of her chest; feeling it when her feet hit the floor. She squeezed her eyes shut.
'No I will not cry for him, no. We both agreed on this. Emotions are nonexistent here. Don't fucking do this, don't get attached again.' She thought to herself.
She opened her eyes to try and get some work done when she saw a stain of water on the paper, and then another. She couldn't help herself, she cried hysterically. Not even noticing she was destroying her office in the process. When she finally stopped, she wiped her eyes and pulled out a mirror and examined herself. Her eyes were red and puffy as tears still remained inside them. She pushed back the urge to let them out as her head turned up.
She felt numb again and her sorrowful eyes went wide as she saw his whole family standing in front of her. They greeted her and asked her what was internally hoped they didn't witness her little display of emotion. They had gone to his house looking for him and he wasn't there, one of the places they thought to check for him was with his reconnected best friend.
'Do you know where he has been? He never goes out this late.' His mother asked.
Feeling guilty lying to her, she just simply said, 'no. I haven't seen him since this morning.'
'Fuck me.' She thought to herself. She knew the entire Team Avatar families and guests were coming to Republic City for the winter festival. She can't believe that she forgot, she made a mental note to keep her emotions on low radar when she remembered she would have to be around him.
They shrugged, said their goodbyes with hugs and left. When she couldn't see them anymore and the door locked behind them, she tried again to get some work done, unable to escape the numbness inside her once again, she felt the hot tears run down her face, heart breaking into a million pieces and cried.
