Prologue

I lose my mom

(June 6th, 2:10 PM)

I was sitting in my house, playing video games. It was a day like any other day, and those days had a glorious absence of excitement. I was so board, even as the enemies died at the hands of my character, being controlled by a piece of plastic in my hands. When suddenly, Mom was stumbling to the front door. One hand was wrapped around her stomach; the other was over Dad's shoulders.

"Be back in a bit, Maxi," Dad's voice was full of concern, so I knew something was up. I was going to ask but Dad shut the door behind them, so it was too late to ask what was going on. I picked up the phone and dialed a number,

"Hello?" asked a familiar female voice on the other line,

"Roxanne," I said, trying to sound concerned and panicked, which was easy because I was concerned and panicked, "My dad took my mom somewhere, and he sounded really worried,"

"He left you there and didn't even tell you where he was going or why?" asked Roxanne, "I'll be right there." I know I might get looked at funny, but I was worried sick, and Roxanne is like a budding therapist. We played games and awaited my dad to return.

"Don't worry, Max," said Roxanne, soothingly, "your mom has been through worse, and she bounced right back; I'm sure today's no different."

"Are you sure?" I asked,

"Yes," she replied.

"What did she live through that was worse than something that would concern even my dad?"

"Giving birth do you," she said. She was right, I heard from dad that she almost died giving birth to me." When the door burst open, and Dad was sobbing his heart out.

"Max," he said. That's when I knew it was serious. Dad never called me Max unless something beyond terrible had happened.

"The doctors couldn't save your mother; she's passed on to the good lord." Tears fell out of my eyes like lava out of a volcano; hot and slow. Roxanne gave me a sympathetic kiss on the cheek, and left. Dad told me that in his wedding vows, he'd remarry should mom die early. But he couldn't get mom off his mind, and I don't blame him.

Mom was like an angel from heaven. You can't replace angels.
