Dealing
By B.L.A. the Mouse
Neither of them had made a bet in the last five minutes. It had been Rommie's turn the whole time, but she was too busy ranting about Dylan's latest order. "Three weeks! On a tour! When we should be doing other things!"
"At least we're not getting shot at?" Harper ventured. He didn't mind hearing Dylan the Sainted One getting verbally abused by Rommie, even in absentia (not that he entirely blamed the man. Molly was good-looking), but he thought he had a good hand this round. Given that Rommie was annoyed enough to be off from her normal card counting, he was hoping he might even win this one. "It's your bet."
She tossed in a chip. He wasn't sure that she even bothered looking. "I'd prefer getting shot at. I'm a warship, not a pleasure cruiser. If Admiral Stark were here—"
"I call," he cut in. He didn't want to listen to commentary about the vaunted Admiral Stark, either. They set down their cards and he was pleased to discover that yes, he did have a much better set, and he raked in the chips before shuffling the deck again. As he did so, debating whether he could get away with the stacking it and wishing he'd at least tried harder to convince her to play strip poker given her state of agitation, he said, "Look, it could be worse. At least right now he's on the Maru instead of making you chauffeur them."
"No, given that he's still using Commonwealth assets for an assignation!"
Harper thought that Beka would probably agree with the sentiment, given her ranting the day before, but he really doubted that she'd approve of the description of her ship as the Commonwealth's.
