Osamu's First Day of School

Ken really was an attention-hog. Barely able to walk on his own, he clung to his brother's leg and refused to let go.

Their mother sighed, trying to untangle the pair. Their father looked amused, if a little anxious. Osamu couldn't help but grin, even if he was aware of the clock's impatient ticking behind them.

'Oh, you're going to be late for your first day of school,' their mother fretted. When trying to pry Ken's fingers loose didn't work, their mother tried to pick him up again. Instantly, the year old boy squirmed until she let go of him, the end result being he now clung to her legs instead of Osamu's.

'We'll be fine; there's enough time.' Their father forced a grin, although Osamu's was fading now. Being surrounded by strangers did not appeal to him at the least. It was hard enough having a little brother. Though he had to admit that, despite all the trouble Ken tended to cause, between clinging to them at inopportune moments, and knocking things over in his adventurous crawls, he had managed to grow on him. And although he knew he had to go to school, he felt his time would be much better spent playing hide and seek with Ken as opposed to making new friends.

Osamu looked up to find their father taking his hand. 'We're off,' he said, cheerfully but quickly, to the pair staying behind.

'Wait!' their mother cried. 'A photo!' With some difficulty, mainly due to her youngest son still clinging to her, she found the camera and fired off three quick shots. The flashes set Ken off, and as Osamu was hurried out the door, he could hear his mother singing softly to the now wailing child.

'Looking forward to school?' their father asked, taking Osamu's hand and leading him as fast as they could go across the street. 'You'll learn lots of fun things there.'

Osamu nodded, but didn't really think so.

Their father looked back at him. 'You might miss us at first, but it will be fun. I promise.'

Osamu didn't think how school could be fun.
