A Girl in the Valley
By LupineMoon
As Lily walked down the aisle toward James, she recalled the last few years of her life.
She remembered getting her Hogwarts letter and her sister's jealousy. She remembered getting onto the train and meeting James for the fist time…
He had been polite, if not a bit pompous. She hadn't liked or disliked him at that moment...but things had changed dramatically within the first month. She learned that James Potter was mischievous—and even moreso in the company of Sirius Black and Remus Lupin—arrogant, and a whole host of other things. She had also learned later on that he liked her…a lot.
He would ask her out constantly. She turned him down every time, of course…until the last time he'd asked her out during their seventh year. He had matured so much; she was so proud of him. And now, they were getting married.
And she couldn't be happier.
A man who came to my valley,
A man I hardly knew,
A man who came to my garden
Grew to love me.
James watched as his bride-to-be walked down the aisle alone. Merlin, she was beautiful. And he felt so lucky and happy to be the one to marry her.
He smiled as he recalled the years he'd chased after her, and his smile grew as he remembered the day she'd finally said yes.
A girl I saw in the valley,
A girl I hardly knew,
A girl at work in her garden
Grew to love me.
Lily remembered their first date. They had gone to Hogsmeade and had a picnic. It had been lovely…Gryffindor had just won a Quidditch match, the war was going well, and the two were happy.
From the gate,
He called out so kindly,
"Lass, wouldst thou 'low me
Rest here? I've ridden quite far."
James remembered how he'd snuck down to the kitchens right before going to meet Lily to ask the house-elves to pack them a basket. And as usual, the house-elves had outdone themselves.
"Share my tea,"
She bade me so gently,
Oatcakes and cream
Sweet plums in a jar.
Contrary to popular belief, Lily's favorite flowers were roses. And it was roses that she got.
She had finally gotten exasperated when she didn't have anywhere to put them all. Her room was so full of them that the smell was nearly suffocating, but still she had smiled at his eagerness to please her. And then, on Valentine's Day, he had proposed.
And of course, Lily accepted.
And every day to my garden,
This man, who might he be
Came bearing baskets of roses,
For he loved me.
James had been ecstatic. He promised Lily the world.
All I own I'd give!
But Lily hadn't wanted money or wealth. She'd just wanted him and a little something for herself.
Just a garden.
And he, too, had only wanted one thing from her.
All I would ask is never to—
And she had agreed.
Never to leave!
They both recited their wedding vows. Instead of the traditional ones, the couple had written their own.
Say you'll have me,
Safe you will keep me.
Where you would lead me,
There
He promised to protect, cherish and honor her.
I would
And they promised to love each other till death parted them.
There I would, there I would,
There I would go.
As the couple walked back out of the church with Sirius following behind them, they knew that they would be happy.
A man who came to my valley A girl I saw in a valley
A man I hardly knew, A girl I hardly knew,
A man who gave me a garden, A girl who gave me a garden
Grew to love me. Grew to love me.
