Author's Notes: A brief poem from Elrond's eyes, reflecting on his beloved wife Celebriàn.

Earth and Sky

We stood on the balcony, watching the stars

All of the joy in the world seemed ours

Her head on my chest, body in my embrace

She looked at me, a smile on her lovely face

She said, 'You are the earth and I am the sky'

I was confused and asked her 'Why?'

But she laughed at me and drifted away

Another word game for us to play

But where I could usually triumph with ease

This latest puzzle was harder to please

What could she mean, with the earth and the sky

Was she saying that she was much higher than I?

She would never say that, so I ruled it out

Did she mean I was stiff, always rooted about?

But she wouldn't insult me, that wasn't her way

Then what in the world was she trying to say?

This puzzle so vexed me; it clouded my mind

Always the answer I was seeking to find

She wished my surrender; it was in her eyes

She wanted to outwit her Elrond the Wise

At last I gave up, and I said with a sigh,

'Why am I the earth while you are the sky?'

'Think, my dear husband,' she laughed merrily

'Who is rooted in knowledge, and who dances free?

Of the two of us, who is more airy, like song?

And who is more firm and solid and strong?

My head's in the clouds and the winds tugs my hair

While you stand like a rock and you'll always be there.'

I laughed at her then, and I said 'You are right.'

'As always, my love.' She shot back with delight

We kissed, and she left me to sleep in our bed

But I stood with this knowledge adrift in my head

I never had noticed, but it was so true

Even her eyes are a shade of sky blue

While my eyes are grey, like a substance of earth

Hers twinkle like stars as they sparkle with mirth

I'm her rock, I'm her root, I'm her haven of peace

And she is the breeze that will bring my release

She dances on clouds and she shines like the sun

And just like the earth and the sky, we are one

Her mother's the moon and her father's the sea

How fitting their daughter the sky should be

And here, I, the earth, am now ever blessed

As the sky herself comes to my arms to rest

Adrift on the winds, the sky floats and is free

But wherever it is, there the earth will be

It is always that way, and it holds true to its' own

As the earth and the sky are never alone

And the same thing is true for my wife and I

The earth cannot be without the sky

And the sky cannot be without the earth

While through their union there comes a new birth

Our sons, the wind, and our daughter, the stars

Yes, truly all blessings on earth are now ours

And no one has ever been happy as I

For I am the earth and my love is the sky
