Shooting Stars
They woke in the wee hours of morning. Neither spoke as they dressed; there was no need to. Companionable silence filled the apartment. They slid out into the dark hours before dawn.
Wrapped in a blanket, they sat on the beach sharing a cup of hot chocolate. As they watched the sky, a star fell then another. The sky filled with a rain of stars.
Even after the last star had fallen, they remained. Barefoot, the two of them walked in the misty surf. Down the sandy beach they walked toward the lighthouse that was just barely visible in the dusky light.
The dawn came. The red-gold sun stained the clouds and shimmered across the water. They sat on the rocks and watched it rise. Finally when the sky was blue, and sea was green, they headed home.
