So, this is my first Hunger Games story. It's only an oneshot, but let me know what you think.

Peeta's POV

Kill her, kill her, kill her, it says.

Katniss, Katniss, Katniss, says the other voice.

I squeeze my eyes shut and try to focus on what I need to do. I focus on staying Peeta.

My name is Peeta Mellark. I am from District 12. There is no more District 12. I love Katniss Everdeen. She doesn't love me back. My family is dead. I am mentally insane…. I stop myself there. I figure that the more depressing thoughts aren't good.

I look up from my feet to make sure she's still in eyesight. The moment I see her it starts again. I am infiltrated with hate and sorrow and the overwhelming fear. Kill her, kill her. She wants to kill you. Kill her, it chants. I shake my head to try to block the thoughts. No, I am not going to be the Capitol's mutt. I am Peeta Mellark. Real. I am from District 12. Real. I love Katniss. Real. Even though they have taken my mind prisoner, I still try stay myself. Real. If I'm going to die – which it's obvious at this point that I will – I want to die me. Very real.

I follow Katniss into the City Circle and watch as she heads toward a light pole. It's hard to keep track of her in the chaos, but I manage. My head snaps to my left as I hear a buzzing over head. The air gets colder; so cold that I can feel it in my bones. I try to listen to the sound, find its source, but the crowd gets louder. I do my routine check to make sure Katniss is in sight and realize what the sound was.

The hovercraft appears out of nowhere and drop the small silver parachutes. I recognize them immediately. In the Games they meant safety, relief. Signals went off in my head. Why would they drop off presents in the middle of a war zone? It makes no sense. I thought it over and over. By the time I figured out what was about to happen it's too late.

What happens next seems to take a lifetime, but is really only a few seconds. The parachutes detonate, sending pieces of flesh everywhere and igniting piercing screams. I see medics run over and immediately realize that they are from District 13. I see Katniss's head jerk up. She seems to be trying to get someone's attention. I scan the area and see Prim standing just in front of Katniss. I keep scanning the area and realize that some of the parachutes have not gone off. That could only mean… At that thought I take off as fast as my prosthetic leg will let me. I yell to Katniss to take Prim and get out, but she can't hear me over the chaos.

Kill her, kill her, kill her. Save her, save her, save her.

Prim doesn't have time to register what is happening as the screams begin again. I see the surprise on her face as the flames rise toward her. I know what will happen. I know, and nothing I can do could stop it. Katniss screams as she realizes what is happening. I am in front of her as the flames hit. My body is engulfed with the flames but I catch Katniss as she falls, passed out cold. She is badly burned and I realize I am too. We both fall to the ground. I want to run, to get her as far away as possible.

Kill her, kill her, kill her.

I tried to run, but I could do nothing but lie next to her as the flames rose. I knew, this is it. I knew these were my last moments, but my only regret was that I couldn't save Katniss, that these were her last moments too. She didn't even know I was here; she passed out before I was in front of her.

Save her, save her, save her.

I can't.

My last thoughts before I blacked out were: Now we are both on fire.

I passed out as the world went black, but the image would be burned into my mind forever. The girl on fire, truly on fire. My girl on fire. Dying.

Save her, save her, save her.
