"We can't tell anyone."
"Of course not," Sabrina agreed quickly. This was like all of Salem's other plans. It wouldn't work. She'd do the spell for him. He'd still be a cat, and he would go off to sulk over the failure, successfully leaving her alone to do her homework. She sighed inwardly despite her smile. School was hard enough without having the family cat constantly interrupting her work to pester her for a spell.
Salem sat upright, his jet black tail swishing with a mix of eager anticipation and agitation. He was tired of being a cat. The girl was probably right: His latest scheme would work no better than the million others he'd already attempted. Still, he had to try.
He leaned forward as she began to chant. His ebony ears perked up with each new syllable uttered from her lips. His green eyes drifted shut, and then . . . He trembled with excitement. It might only be his imagination, but he felt like he was growing! For a moment, he considered opening his eyes to check but quickly decided against it both for fear that movement might interrupt the spell and that he would find that he was wrong.
Sabrina stopped speaking. Salem remained as still as a statue until she breathed, "Oh. My. God!"
Only then did he open his eyes just a narrow enough crack to peek out at her. His emerald orbs opened wider when he saw her gawking at him with shock . . . from many, many feet down below. "Sabrina?" His ears flattened against his head at the sound of his own, booming voice. "Did it work?"
"Not exactly," she said, pouting. She was going to flunk another test tomorrow, because tonight, she had to figure out how to degiantize a cat!
The End
