Prologue

I still remember that day so many years ago. It was July 4th or Independence day. As always it had stormed and rained for most of the day. And of course it stopped when night came so that made it super misty. Like something from those cheesy horror movies you see. I put down my worn out copy of Wuthering Heights by Emily Dickinson and looked out the window to try and see the fireworks through the mist and the dark clouds.

I wondered why I haven't heard them going off yet since it was 8:00pm and the Independence Day baseball game was supposed to end at that time. I was just get curious about this thought since I had waited my whole short seventeen years of life for something interesting to happen in my small American town.

But just then the firework shot up into the sky and exploded with a bang. I sigh and told myself it was to good to be true. I had already plained that when the school year ended that I would move to London to go to Oxford or Cambridge for school. I couldn't wait for that change to come. After the fireworks ended I walked outside to wait for my one and only best-friend Lacy to pick me up. She had somehow convinced socially awkward me to go out clubbing with her.

Yeah, I know. Why did I say yes? I have no earthly clue. Early that night I had combed my mess of almost white hair back into a braided bun. I had applied some light make-up and most important some porcelain foundation. Because everything and I mean everything stands out on pail skin. I had pulled on a nice but not sleazy dress but sex was not on my agenda tonight. It was sliver and cut off a inch above my thigh.

I stood in my three inch heels on the sidewalk in front of my house waiting for Lacy to show. I looked around trying to see the through the mist. My mistake. I saw two pairs of amber eyes gleaming in a stream of the full, bright moon. My scream caught in my throat as the creature stalked toward me. It looked like something from one of those old werewolf movies but my suspicions were confirmed when it slowly came forward. It sniffed my neck as I tried to remain stiff and not shake.

Then before I could even process it bit me. My scream finally surfaced as I fell onto my knees and onto the damp grass. Why did my parents have to trust me so much as to go to bed early. Crap, he's picking me up. Ugh why is my body not responding. Come on body, move! Ugh, no use. I looked up at him and that was the last thing I saw before I blacked out.
