During the night, Merlin just lays in his bed and listens. He just lays there and listens to whatever he can hear. It's that point in the night where nobody else seems to be awake.
He can't hear Gaius' snores, and maybe for once Gaius isn't snoring. He can't hear any doors creaking in the wind, in fact, there isn't any wind tonight. He can't hear any guards patrolling, he can't hear any people creeping about the castle, like normal.
He can't hear the Dragon, calling him for another lecture. He can't hear the gently dripping of the rain like sometimes, or the wheels of a cart being driven under his window. He can't even hear a bird, or an animal of some sort. Nothing. Silence.
He holds his breath, the only thing he can' hear is his gently heartbeat. And that's his reward; because that's all he's ever wanted. Silent, gentle appreciation. And, in that silence, he feels on top of the world, like nothing can bring him down.
Merlin doesn't need a big knighting ceremony, he doesn't need flashy armour, he doesn't need his nemesis dead. All he needs, for one of the first time, is a comfortable, appreciative silence. And, perfectly content, his held breath comes out as a sigh as he slowly drifts to sleep, ready for whatever may come in his eventful future with destiny.
