Amy was taking a walk through the park. She loved looking at all the flowers, especially
in springtime. She sniffed a lilac bush, deep in thought. She had finished all her
homework, read two chapters of Chemistry, and done all the homework for the next two
weeks in her three-hour study period. Her mother had made her set up a specific time
for homework when she was just seven years old. Even when she did not have
homework, her mother made her read important literary works, do math problems, or
expand her vocabulary with a dictionary and flash cards. She soon became so smart the
other kids would have nothing to do with her.
"Nerd!"
"Geek!"
"C'mon, we don't want the *bookworm* on our team!"
She had been an outcast as long as she could remember. She never had found a place she
fit-in: a place she was normal.
And then she moved to Tokyo. And her life was turned upside down. Now she was a
superhero, with magical powers. And she had friends, who didn't mind that she wasn't
normal. No, she still wasn't normal. In fact, now she was even less normal. And there
was one last thing the others had she lacked. They had love. She knew her friends loved
her, but somehow seeing them with their families and their boyfriends just made her feel
jealous and depressed. 'Why doesn't Mom care about me that way?' She would think
every time she visited Serena. 'Does my grampa ever wonder how I am?' she wondered
when she visited the Temple. 'Even Lita had the love of her family, my mother barely
notices if I'm alive. All she wants me around for is bragging.'
"This is my super-genius daughter."
"Amy is top in her class, in everything."
"Amy, show Mrs. Dellaware how good you are in math."
And it was even worse at school. All the guys avoided going anywhere with 'the nerd'.
The only guy who ever even spoke to her was Melvin, and he had a girlfriend. Only one
boy had ever even cared for her at all, and he ended up being a Negamonster.
"I'm so sick of it!" Amy screamed, ripping the daisy she held in her hand to shreds.
"Why doesn't anyone love ME?"
Just then, it started raining. It was raining pretty hard, and Amy fell to her knees. She
was sitting beside a patch of daisies, and sobs racked her small frame.
An unnoticed figure moved in the shadows. It moved toward Ami. She was surprised to
notice the rain was no longer falling on her. She looked up into deep, wise, loving eyes.
The figure was Greg. "I've been watching the whole time. Don't cry anymore; I love
you, Amy." He said it thoughtfully, earnestly. "I went to your
house, looking for you. My family has come back
to Tokyo. Dad has been permanently moved to this location. I'll be staying for a long
time, now." He knelt beside her, and kissed her cheek. "You won't ever be lonely again.
I promise."
They sat there and talked for a few minutes. They finally got up and found shelter from
the rain. They sat in a gazebo, in a loving embrace, and silently watched the falling rain.
