Sasuke breathed unsteady breaths, trying in vain to stop the flow of tears. He didn't know why he'd thought it would work. It was stupid of him, thinking back on it. He'd only been on the same team as the dead last for half a year, and he'd considered him a friend for even less. He may have been his best friend, but that was because he was his only friend. Severing their bond hadn't hurt as much as he'd thought it would. As much as he'd hoped it would.
He wouldn't gain the Mangekyō from Naruto's death, and he would never be able to get as close to someone as he was to Naruto if killing them was his intention from the beginning. Maybe he wasn't meant to obtain those eyes? Maybe he wasn't meant to avenge his clan?
Sasuke shook his head roughly, digging his nails into his palms. He would never give up on his goals. He'd gone with the Sound Four- and where we're they anyway?- so that he could gain an alternate source of power.. So what if he couldn't gain those eyes? With his newly upgraded seal, he was much more powerful than before! He'd even killed Naruto, even with that strange chakra of his. He was powerful without those eyes, and worrying about them would only slow him down.
Besides, he had a new teacher. Someone who wasn't burdened by morals to teach him. With time, he would gain more power than those eyes could offer.
