Chapter 1 Introduction/Getting Ready for the Ball
The courtyard was once again filled with decorations. White tents being strung up, table's miles long, and white carnations filled the grassy quad of Avathonia Palace. Servants and chefs worked madly to finish in time; the whole palace was in an uproar. The annual Masquerade Ball was an important time. Soon, people will be crowding in the courtyard, dressed in fancy gowns and faces hidden by masks. It was the most long-awaited party of the year. Yet. there were twice as many guards as there were servants. For many loved King Dyuun, but even more loathed him. "I am surprised if they even let father dance this evening!" A girl whispered to another man. "Those guards are way too protective!" That is Princess Elandra Dyuun, daughter of King Dyuun. She is age twenty-one, and has spunk to spare. And that man next to her, is her brother. Prince Lothos Dyuun, age twenty-one also, twins. He was more of the thinker and diplomat than his sister. He didn't rush into things as she did. "They are only trying to protect Father! That is their duty, nothing more." Lothos said, pushing in golden locks from his face. "I know that!" Elandra hit him with her parasol. "But they should still let Father breathe!" She took her gaze from her brother to the center of the garden. Her father, jolly and vigorous as every was walking with another man. The man was strange, Elandra had never seen him before. The man looked almost celestial, his straight raven hair gently brushed backaway from his pallid face. His amethyst optics seemed to trap you within them. "Elandra?!" She came back to reality, glancing over to her to her brother. She took her hands and pushed his face to the direction of the man with her father. "Who is that?" She said, her hands digging into her brother's cheeks. "His name is Kryn Danae." Lothos said, having a hard time talking due to his sister's hands. "He is father's new steward. I don't like him at all. He gives me the chills. His eyes are lifeless and cold." "I don't think so, he looks harmless." Her hands let loose. "You're just jealous because you can't be a steward for father till your twenty- five!" "That's not it!" Lothos' face turned red, he glared at Elandra. "Yes . it is." She said, grinning. "Don't tell me you are not! I know you better than you do yourself. "I don't need to take this, I have things to attend to." He stood, fixed his jewel incrusted jacket, and walked off. Elandra rolled her eyes, glancing back at her father. The Kings' beard blocked her mouth, Elandra couldn't read his lips. She thought nothing of it, she went back to her tea.
"Your daughter is very beautiful, M'Lord." Kryn said, staring at Elandra, he picked a moonflower, picking off the petals. They fell gently to the ground. "Of course she is! She is, after all, my daughter." The king laughed. "Don't you be getting any ideas, Kryn." "Of course not." Kryn said, still looking. "And why not!?!?" The king said in rage. Kryn turned, his eyes filled with confusion. The king was a strange man indeed. His thought process was a little slow, but hey made good enough decisions. "Ermm.." Kryn said, trying to back away from the subject. "Oh never mind. I must go get ready for tonight. I hope to see you at my party." "Of course, M'lord." Kryn bowed, watching the king walk off.
