Out Of The Rain
Tomoya heaved a long suffering sigh, watching the rain drip and drop off the over hang of the front entrance, glaring at the world and it's white out of water. The rain was soothing, to be sure, the constant tapping staccato of the water on concrete calming, the smell of the air somehow cleaner, fresher. It was to be expected of the rainy season, but Tomoya hadn't the foresight to bring an umbrella with him.
"Man, this really puts a damper on my plans. Literally." The pun only made him scowl at the rain more, hands shoved in his blazer's pockets, breath fogging out in front of him in the damp chill.
Originally, his idea had been to skip out on science class to run down to the convenience store to buy himself some iced coffee or something. The rain had inadvertently dashed those plans. But he couldn't return to class. He didn't want to.
"You look quite sad there, Okazaki." Tomoya shot a glare at his overly energetic friend, who pulled a pink umbrella from his bag with an air of superiority, smirking lazily. "Could it be that you forgot the weatherman called for rain today? Luckily I, the great Sunohara, have come to you from above to lend you my umbrella!" Youhei struck a stupid pose, hand at his hip and umbrella pointed towards Tomoya, expression comically solemn before he winked at his silent friend. "So, what do you think?"
Tomoya's only reply was to bring his fist down on Youhei's head, making the smaller blonde whine at him. "You're an idiot." he said softly, his air cool, with marked disinterest as he shoved his hands back in his pockets, staring out once more at the rain soaked yard, watching the ripple in the puddles as the raindrops struck them.
Youhei's cheeks puffed up in a pout, the unhappy expression directed at Tomoya's back. "I was trying to be nice to you! I figured you might skip to get some coffee." Youhei waved his arms around to vent his irritation, pink umbrella falling to the damp ground with a thump, before Youhei stopped. They stood in silence for a while, just watching the rain. Behind them, the school bell rang, signalling the change to next period, but they stayed where they were, hands tucked defiantly in their pockets, uncaring of the normal teenage life that went on behind them.
Tomoya heaved another long suffering sigh, not much different than the one he breathed out fifteen minutes prior, bending to pick up the pink umbrella from where it had fallen in Youhei's brief sulking fit, stepping out from under the over hang as he opened the umbrella.
Youhei watched him with wide sparkling blue eyes, as though amazed, as Tomoya held out his hand for him, lips twisted up in a small smile, brown eyes warm and glowing. "Well, are we going to get that coffee, or what?" It took Youhei a moment to process the question, before he beamed a thousand killowatt smile, jumping off the two concrete steps to join Tomoya under the pink umbrella, shoulders brushing as they set off towards the convenience store, the blonde talking a mile a minute.
"So." he said softly, grinning up at his black haired friend. "You coming to my place tonight too?"
Tomoya just smiled, looking off into the distance, oddly content. "Yeah."
