Just a warning, this is a slight AU so the Hyuuga Affair won't happen until Hinata turns five and Neji won't be branded until then. I've always been curious about Hinata's mother because she was never mentioned and didn't appear in her daughter's birthday celebration, she only appeared in a photo with her eyes closed, meaning there is a chance she wasn't even a Hyuuga. In fact, she looks quite similar to Mikoto Uchiha if you compare them so I came up with a strange theory which turned into one of my pathetic attempts at writing. Everyone paints her as a kind woman but there's always the chance she wasn't, because look how Hinata turned out despite having her mother to support her for around six years and Hanabi who (probably) didn't meet her turned out to be confident enough to strike her sister on her father's orders. Well, don't listen to my rambling and read on!
Hahaue-Mother
Chichiue-Father
Chibi-means short or small. It is used by Hinata's mother as a nickname
They say that Konohagakure is a strong village filled with powerful shinobi so the war between them and Kumogakure shouldn't wage on for too long and Hinata doesn't doubt it. If Hahaue believes it to be true then it surely must be so. Hahaue is never wrong.
Even so, the clan worried for the safety of their young heiress so her caretaker, Ko was instructed to teach her the basic katas she was meant be taught later on, when she turned five. To everyone's surprise, the heiress had remembered the katas within two weeks, it was only a matter of time until she perfected them.
Chichiue said she was making good progress but Hahaue thought differently. She believed there could be more improvement at a quicker pace and Hinata didn't doubt it so she pushed herself even more. Hahaue is never wrong.
Despite Hinata's efforts, her progress seemed to be nothing compared to the Branch Cadet's pride, Neji Hyuuga and she knew neither Chichiue or Hahaue (or the elders) were happy about it. While Hinata heard from her father that Neji was her direct cousin, she couldn't allow him to continue his prodigious streak. That would mean Hahaue would be mad at her and she doesn't want that. If Hahaue was mad she would have no one to talk to or protect her from the mean Branch Cadets because Chichiue was always busy and Ko, strangely enough seemed scared to start a conversation despite her attempts.
Instead of wallowing as she usually would have done, Hinata went to her mother for advice because Hahaue was never wrong, after all.
As the heiress approached the gardens her mother loved so much she took a moment to observe the woman's profile as she tended to the herbs. Unlike the rest of the people in the compound, her mother possessed long dark bluish tresses that could easily get wild if not properly maintained and pretty obsidian eyes that would turn red at any threat directed at her or her daughter. Hinata wished to have those dark eyes because her own seemed like ugly dead fish eyes or so she thought.
"Ne, Hinata? Are you done practicing?" Her mother asked curling her index finger towards herself a few times. Hinata got the message and rushed over with a bright smile. Hahaue usually tells her to not come anywhere near her garden.
"Hai! But I was-I was w-wondering if…" The older woman almost imperceptibly curled her lip down in disapproval. "Maybe you know what I-I'm doing wrong?" The heiress whispered the last part in fear of retribution. She has already failed Hahaue with her humiliating progress.
The older woman quietly sighed as slid her gloves off her hands, placing them on the patch she was working on and guided Hinata to the porch. "What do you think? Perhaps Ko is not doing a good job teaching you?" she asked as she took a seat beside her daughter.
Hinata quickly shook her head in mortification "It's me, I-I know it is… But what am I do-doing wrong?" she knew for a fact that it wasn't possible for Ko to be doing something wrong because it was always her own fault, her grandfather has made sure reminded her every moment possible since her failure was made common knowledge in the compound.
The woman gently shook her head and took Hinata in her arms while stroking her short hair "Don't listen to those people, the Hyuuga Clan is divided and that means they are weak, Chibi" The heiress tilted her head "But not us, we have each other and that means we are strong."
"I don't understand...I'm sorry." For a moment Hinata thought her mother's lip twitched downward and that scared her. She couldn't afford to lose her mother's approval.
"Don't apologize. Never apologize for what is out of your hands, the Shinobi World will end you if you show it kindness." She admonished as Hinata flinched at the harsh tone.
"Yes, Hahaue. I'll do my-my best."
"Good. Do you know what is chakra?" her mother asked in a gentle voice this time.
Hinata noded, not trusting her voice. Sometimes the drastic changes between her mother's mood worried her but never scared her. Hahaue would never hurt her.
