"It's not fair!" Hermione shoved hear tear-lined face deeper into his chest.

"I know, Hermione… it never is, is it?"

"But how could he do this?... I was nice to him, wasn't I? I thought me and Ron would be together forever… and then… and then…" She gave another muffled sob.

The incident happened exactly an hour ago. Harry was off, looking for signs of a Horcrux in Dumbledore's office. Hermione and Ron had been going out for three happy months.

Hermione was walking back from Potions, surprisingly happy. She spun around, a spring evident in her step. I can't wait till Ron gets out of his tutoring class! She thought, turning the corner towards the door where Ron was supposed to be. Today was their anniversary, and Hermione had a Nimbus broom in her bag for Ron. She put a shrinking charm on it. He should be out by now. She waited a few more seconds. Then a grin on her face, she muttered, "McGonagall won't mind if I cut in." and barged through the door. A few seconds later, she ran right back out.

She didn't stop until she heard "Hermione!" She spun around, trying her best not to cry. "Yes, Ronald?" she replied in a dignified tone.

"It's not what it looks like!" he answered, catching up to her and trying to catch his breath.

"Really? So it didn't look like you and Lavender were sucking each others faces off with your lips on our anniversary?" Her voice got shriller by the minute.

Ron gave her a half-hearted smile. "Of course that's not what it was. She had some ketchup near her lip, and I was getting it off."

"With your lips?!"

Ron grimaced.

"How long has this been going on?"

No reply.

"Answer me!"

"… two months."

"Do you know what, Ron? I don't even care. Go ahead, and be with your bimbo Lavender, because as of this moment, we are over." She reached into her bag and threw out a small package, extravagantly wrapped. She spun around and ran, letting all the tears that were being balanced on her eyelid out. Suddenly, she crashed into someone. She wrapped her arms around the person, not caring who it was.

"Hermione?" the most unlikely voice said, as they wrapped her arms around her.

That's how they ended up near the lake. Hermione never let go of that person.

"Look, maybe… this is a good thing."

"How?" Hermione challenged, wiping away the tears from her eyes. "How in the world could this possibly be a good thing?"

"Well, it could give you a chance to try something new."

"Like what?"

"Well…" There was apprehension in his voice. "Like me…"

Hermione stared up at him. She then reached up, grabbed him, and kissed him, right on the lips.

When they parted, Hermione gazed out into the Lake. "Hmmm…" She looked back up at Draco. "You can always fall in love with something new."
