The Things We Do
"Look, I just want you to know something," Bette whispered furiously as she stalked over to Jenny. "My family and the life that I have worked so hard to rebuild for them means everything in the world to me. And there is nothing that I wouldn't do to preserve and protect them." Jenny watched as her face contorted into indescribable anger. She wasn't scared. In fact, she had to bite her lip to keep from smirking. She tried to keep her big eyed, innocent expression.
"I would never do anything to hurt your family, Bette. I love you. And I love Tina."
These words pushed Bette over the edge. She leaned in closer to Jenny and dropped her voice down lower. "Well I'm glad to hear that because, you what, I don't really care if you think that I fucked Kelly. All I really care about is that you know that I will not abide anyone who threatens my family." At that, she turned and marched out of the room.
Jenny turned and looked out over the pool and breathed a sigh of relief. She was glad everything was over and that it was time. She thought back over the past few weeks. She laughed at the way she made everyone believe she was the victim and wasn't guilty of anything. She thought of all the people she betrayed and hurt and used. Then, she thought of how far gone she was. She didn't even recognize herself anymore.
Always the one for drama, she was determined to leave an impact on the world, a legacy. She decided to have one final betrayal. She used, abused, and confused everyone.
Now, looking out over the still water, the moonlight reflecting so beautifully, she took her final breath on this earth. She had stirred the waters of the ones closest to her and now she stirred the waters of Bette's pool. As she slowly sank to the bottom and felt everything start to go black, she knew people would remember what she did. Her legacy would live on. She had made her mark on the world. It rippled out, just as the disturbed water had as it enveloped her.
