Prologue: Nightmare

Asami stood on the balcony in her nightgown. She couldn't help but feel like something was wrong…with Korra. Behind her Korra tossed and turned calling for him as she had every night since the return from their "vacation" in the spirit world…calling for Aang her predecessor as the Avatar. She knew that Korra wasn't fully healed. The Korra everyone -but her- saw was an illusion. What Korra had been through had left scars on Korra's soul and Asami scared. What if the Korra she loved was gone forever? Korra bolted upright in bed with a cry. Asami rushed to her side. As Korra's mother -Senna- rushed in Asami got Korra calmed down.
"Korra, it's me," Asami said. "You're safe Korra."
"Not safe. Never safe. Not a monster?" Korra asked her voice like a child's. Asami shared a look with Senna.
"No, Korra. You're not a monster," Asami soothed. "Go back to sleep." Korra sighed and lay back. In a matter of minutes she was asleep again. Asami spoke to Senna in the hall.
"Has she done this before? Has she spoken of a 'monster' before?" Asami asked, worried.
"Yes," Senna answered. "Back when she first learned to Firebend. What do we do, Asami?"
"No idea but maybe Katara can help. I'll talk to her in the morning." Asami said.
No need to wait that long." A voice said. An old woman -Katara- stood in the hallway.
"Katara, how-!" Asami stopped as Katara held up her hand.
"Go to Republic City. Speak to Chief Beifong. Ask her where the last Shadowbender is. Tell Beifong that Korra needs help and the Shadowbender is the only one who can help her," Katara said then turned away before Asami could speak. "Good night you two." Asami curled up next to Korra. She would leave for Republic City in the morning. Senna went to sleep worried about Korra.
