Scars
The scars on his body are all life changing and memorable in their own twisted ways. The one on his face had been the first permanent scar etched on his face by his very own father. It was the day he was banished from the kingdom he was destined to succeed, because destiny wanted him to earn it instead.
There are many other scars on his lithe body that have come and gone, each mark indicating another lesson learned and another day gone. The scabs have long peeled but the brown scars that mar his skin remind him of all he's done wrong and all he still has to do before he can properly atone for his sins, and those of the fire lords before him.
The most recent addition to his collection, the angry red blotch that would forever mark his perfectly toned chest, is a reminder of the one he'd risked it all for, and the one he'd give everything he'd ever achieved for. It reminds him that the only one he can never have will always be an arm's width away; but she'd be in the arms of another man, and he'd be holding another woman. They may never share a bed, they will always share longing glances when their spouses aren't looking, because he owes it to Mai for being there for him even after he deserted her without a word, and they owed it to Aang for all that he has done, and will be doing for the world. The whole scene is wrong, wrong, wrong! Utterly and despicably wrong but the world isn't ready for them, so they'll wait. They'll wait for a world where they won't have to hide their love from the world – razor sharp daggers and attacks from Aang in his uncontrolled Avatar State too, lets not forget about that – they'll wait for their happily ever after because they've already walked too far into hell – and one miss step could cause the measly peace they had managed to obtain to fall into chaos - to think about turning back now. The world needs Aang, as Aang needs Katara and as the Fire Nation need a Fire Lord with his lady.
Along the road of life he had led himself, he had acquired many scars. Some heal and fade while others leave permanent marks. He'd like to keep this one – the one right near his heart – because it reminds him of her.
