Ode to you, mother - -

It wasn't fair, you know.

One minute, you were right there with us, and the next, you were gone- torn away from the two of us. I wanted so much to blame someone for your death, but there was noone but dad I could think to hate. However, it didn't satisfy me to hate someone who didn't know or care that I hated him. Someone I couldn't hate face-to-face. Soon, mom, I guess I just decided to mate myself. I felt kind of responsible for what happened to you, and the fact that I couldn't help you any, and I wanted to bring you back.

……I failed miserably.

I was a fool; a damn fool who even risked the life of the only person left in my family… but don't you worry, mom, I'll fix this. I'll return the two of us back to normal. …To make up for failing you.

You taught us a lot. Do you know that? You showed us how wonderful and precious life is, and you taught us to be brave and strong. You taught us that we could be fearless, and not foolish.

Dad… wasn't here when you wanted him to be, and I know that hurt you, but even so, you kept speaking of him with a smile on your face, and comparing us to him. You loved him, I know that, but I'm sorry I couldn't care about him like you did; that hurt you a lot. Maybe one day, I will learn why you loved him so much, and learn to like him, too. If that is what you want, I will try.

Al and I miss you. Did you know that? Ha. Of course you did. You were always a very smart person.

He has lost… a few of his memories of you, since that one day, but I do well to remind him.

You would watch us and smile at us as we practiced and learned to difficult science of Alchemy, and you praised us; you were proud of us… well, mom, we are proud of YOU. We praise you, for being the kindest and most loving mother two brothers like us could ever ask for…

Edward Elric stopped reading what he and his brother had written. His younger brother stood tall next to him as they looked down on the grave of their mother. Ed sniffed and wiped away tears that began to fall. Alphonse patted his brother's back.

"There, there, brother… it's okay."

Ed looked up at his brother and smiled. Nodding his head, he turned back to the grave and clapped his hands together, and pressed them to the ground where some flowers were. Moments later, he raised up a wreath of flowers and placed it on the head stone.

"Sorry, mom. Sorry it took me five years to make you one of these. We miss you, and we both love you. …I think…I can finally come to terms with your passing… and I understand it."

Ed wiped his eyes again and Al did his best to smile at his older brother.

"I think it's time to go now, brother."

"Yeah…."

Ed placed the letter on the grave and turned to leave. Ed looked back only once.

"Goodbye, mom."

On the last part of the letter, it wrote:

To the best mother, friend, and person in the world, Trisha Elric. Rest in peace.

With love,

Edward and Alphonse Elric
