Now, I love Epic Mickey and the nostalgic story it presented. The game was fantastic and it's sequel was just as enjoyable. One thing that really got me wondering about the game was the potential Alice and Wonderland world that was going to take place in Epic Mickey (though, that is not the only thing), but was later recycled for its sequel. When I saw the concept art for the area, I thought the place looked so cool, but it unfortunately didn't come to be the same in the second game. I wanted to delve deeper into the mysterious world and decided to show it here. I could imagine that someone would have already written something like this, but I hope this is the first of its kind. Please read on! Disclaimer: I don't own any property of Epic Mickey or Alice in Wonderland or even the spectacular mash-up of this enchanting tale (or, uh, maybe I do...).
Mickey in Wonderland
Mickey awoke slowly, a small pain in his head and bits of dirt clinging to his face which had been pressed into the Earth. He blinked his eyes rapidly, gradually getting up to a sitting position, and fully looking around, not remembering a thing in the first place. Where am I? The area was hooded in darkness, yet, still adorned bright and sporadic colors. Giant mushrooms that could have been used for an over-sized umbrella popped up from the dirt, littered everywhere you could look. Mickey looked to his left to see a thick stream of Thinner running along the area, far past his peripheral vision. Mickey shook his head, which was a bad idea as it only made him feel more dizzy, and he wobbled to his feet, losing his balance over a fragile and intricately shaped object. He draped over it a moment, trying to regain his equilibrium. He looked down curiously at what supported him, surprised that it was a large, over turned tea-cup. He backed up a bit on his feet to see a swirly line of cups, finding that he would stare down at the ground that happened to be miraculously patterned to match a chess board.
He scratched his head, looking around. "Where am I?" He wondered once again, aloud, now not even sure if he thought it in the first place. How confusing. Mickey turned his head further to the left, immediately regretting it as his heart leaped in fear at the sight. A large devilish looking cat was sitting before him, its smile spread into a cheshire-like grin, horrifically with a set of jagged teeth. It didn't move in any way like it was alive, so it just had to be a diorama. Mickey backed away slightly, taking in the world around him with less confidence. All of a sudden, Mickey swished his head around erratically. Where was Gus?
"Gus!" He hollered, mildly worried for the Gremlin's safety and his own. Where could he be, and where was Mickey now? He stood back in the wide, ominous place, thinking. Things were slowly starting to come back to Mickey. He recalled being in Wasteland at the hall of projectors after succeeding a few missions and being granted free time before plopping into another land in need of saving. Mickey was enchanted by the many different worlds he never thought he would visit again when he entered the spiraling corridor. Naturally, he had to take in the depth, admiring the concept arts before moving on to the many other memories. Gus was just behind him as well, floating along in fascination while also trying to keep an eye on Mickey.
"Wow, I can't believe these little memories were able to be kept," Mickey had to comment in awe, bending his head to get good looks at the scene.
"Yes, it was tough to find, but after we Gremlins and Oswald decided to band together to recreate your old toons for Oswald's personal use, we soon learned that it was all paid off when you arrived," Gus detailed merrily, flying past a few projectors Mickey hadn't viewed yet.
Mickey tried to peel himself away from the projectors he stared at for good solid minutes to catch up with Gus, but it was terribly difficult to try. He hopped forward, trying to restrain himself from stopping dead in front of another projector, but then one in particular caught his eye. It was a dark picture. Dark clouds, dark design, and especially dark images, yet still compelling with its mystery. Mickey cupped his chin, inspected the projector closely, Gus' voice fading into an echo down the corridor, not realizing himself that he was coming closer, or rather, being dragged closer to the picture. Mickey felt gravity tugging at him towards the projector. He snapped his head down his feet, shocked to see they were being forcefully pulled over the velvet carpet. He may have been in a cartoony land where weird things happen on a daily basis, but this was a different kind of oddity.
"U-uh, Gus!" Mickey called out in fear, but it was already too late as Gus was no where in sight (already too far ahead). Mickey managed one final look at the projector, the image beginning to twist and deform and Mickey was sucked into the haunting image into darkness.
So there he was now, just standing, shaking in the dark, heart-stopping scene. "Uh-huh... what do I... do?" He scratched the back of his head, looking around while trying to keep his guard down. He looked over at the Thinner waterfall spilling down into the thin river in front of him, trying to completely avoid contact with the devilish looking cat above.
"I guess I'm really in the picture, huh," he mumbled to himself dejectedly, reaching for the back of his head and suddenly bumping his hand with a soft bristle and a drop of paint. Mickey jumped lightly and pulled behind him to be pleasantly surprised by the sight of his trusty paintbrush in his possession. He looked around the area again, then up to the pure black sky. "Well, if I can't get out of hear calling for help, I might as well explore and hope for the best." Mickey nodded at this idea, throwing his paintbrush lightly and catching it with great skill enough to fill him up with a teensy bit of hope.
He gave careful consideration to the directions he could turn to, but each 'wall' was blocked up by tall trees, there was just nothing. Aversely, he started making his way to the Chesire Cat's faltering smile, wincing as he swore the eyes followed. He easily hopped over the stream and thinned out a neat spray to the front bottom teeth. All of a sudden, whistling of a whisper echoed silently around Mickey. He felt like something, or the cat, was talking to him, so, so harshly. He practically froze in fear, the whisperings now forming into words striking so hard, it was as if sickeningly palpable. "Mickey," it said. "Come here," it rasped, tone rapt of malevolence. Mickey shook, swaying in fear, but only knew it would get better if he kept going (that's what he wanted, anyway). Mickey managed to make his feet mobile, to climb up the gap (still feeling its rotten stare.) and pass, but only saw dim darkness ahead. The voices had stopped like they had never started, and Mickey only wrung his gloved hands a bit finding no comfort in the sudden silence. There seemed to be no other way out back there, however, and this entrance did seem some what conspicuous. He knew there was no better idea then to move on. He took a hasty breath through the mouth, "oh-h-h boy..."
Slowly, ever so slowly, he crept through the blinding darkness, motioning his arms around in a hesitance to touch something. Eventually, though, light started reappearing to his vision. A small flicker of light that gradually grew bigger and bigger the closer Mickey walked, but it was an odd growth. When Mickey reached the light, it was a towering wall of beaming light that suddenly toppled down to half of Mickey's size. He shielded his eyes and waited for the light to dim down. He peered through as it outlined the frame of a miniature door and was dumbfounded.
A doorknob was the last thing to form, so Mickey bent over and raised his hand out to it, squishing the knob in his hand and jolting back when it barked pain in response. Micky fell into a cramped fetal position, trembling as he heard muffled muttering from the door. He untangled himself after regaining control and sneaked a peek, astonished at the sight of something even more bizarre than things in Wasteland. A doorknob with a face on it.
"Have you no decency, sir!?" Mickey almost didn't hear the doorknob spat and stared at it.
It didn't do much but stare back at him, starting to look impatient and greatly disturbed. Mickey wasn't necessarily sure how to respond to this, so he simply ran an 'uhh' through his lips, rubbing his head.
"You dim-witted troglodyte, just what do you want at this time of hour so desperately to bother me?" It finally asked, making no effort to excuse the harsh tone.
Mickey winced a little. Just so... bizarre. "Uh-huh, sorry, I'm just looking for a way out of this projector world I fell in by accident. I mean, I'm not too sure what's going on here, but I just really need to get back."
Mickey felt awkward and coy at the door's disgruntled expressions, but it did look like it was pondering. It straigtened its face, still looking a bit cross, "well, I have no idea what exactly you're talking about, but... you seem like a lost, innocent boy who just wants to go home, so I'll let you off this time-"
The doorknob suddenly opened its mouth wide, starting to stretch high and wide enough for Mickey to supposedly cross. Mickey cringed, ...okay. He tilted his head back up at the doorknob, which said nothing (mostly because it couldn't). The innocent mouse carefully crept through the entrance into another dark space, unable to rip his eyes away from the stretched mouth. The moment he stepped out the doorknob instantly shrank back to size and slowly dissolved.
"Not that I think you'll make it back alive," it added, the voice hushed away by oblivion for only the darkness as the friend again, and Mickey gulped. N-now what?
That is that for the very first chapter. Wow, this was short (in my standards). It would seem that at this slow, registering pace, this story will go over ten chapters! That shouldn't happen though, I'll try to make it longer. So, Mickey has gotten himself wrapped up in another situation, huh! Things related to Alice in Wonderland will happen and there's going to be a twist at the end that will make you question.
Alright, basically hope that was good for now, hopefully people like it, but there is always writing for fun, no. More Epic Mickey to come!
