Cold darkness surrounded her as she exited the hospital. Dim lights lit up the parking lot. Karen walked to her car with one intent in her mind. To thank the father of her son for finally acknowledging him and saving his life.
As she opened the door of the car dealership, she took a deep breath. The last time, I'd actually gone near Dan Scott without the intent of hurting him was …………a long time ago. Shaking her head, Karen moved forward with swift intent.
Dan looked up from his desk and saw her. A vision of beauty coming in from the dark………it's been so long…..since I've seen her without bitterness between us……or am I just deluding myself.
Dan walked out of his office. "It had to be the consent forms, he needed surgery, you have a right to be upset." His words were muffled by her arms as she moved closer to hug him.
Taking a second to inhale the unique scent that was Karen, a mixture of damp raindrops, musk and soft silky skin. He pulled back as she moved away.
Karen forgot about everything except the feeling of being in his arms. Looking up into his face, she saw a bit of what had made her fall in love with him in high school still there. It gnawed at her…….what if?
Shaking her head, Karen crushed that thought. He'd made the choice not be part of her life or Lucas's. Looking up into his brown eyes, she uttered the words. "Thank you."
As she turned to walk away, a gentle hand on her shoulder stopped her. She turned to look at him. Questions in her eyes. "Karen I-" was muffled by a hand that went to his lips.
"Dan, not now, it's too late for what ifs, it's sixteen years too late, you made your choice and I made mine." Tears made her eyes shiny and emotional in the harsh showroom lighting.
Dan pulled her into his arms. "I don't care about the past or the future, all I care about is right now. I have to know if it's still the same as it was then, if it's still as good, as powerful. If the need still consumes me." Taking a deep breath, he lowered his head.
Cold lips touched her warm ones. Like the kiss of winter caressing the frailty of spring. His hand moved to cup her neck at a slight angle. Slowly his lips moved on hers, a dart of heat raced through her body. Her heart slowed down, assessing what was happening and then sped up as memories rushed through her mind.
Their first date…………….followed by their first kiss……………followed by senior prom……….and so many wishes made in the deferential delusion that was their love.
Dan felt his pulse soar as heat flowed through him, desire began to rage, passion beckoned. Memories assailed him. Dan pulled back, slowly his fingers slid down her cheek, touching a teardrop which shone like a diamond in silver light.
Karen buried her head against his chest. Her eyes opened as she looked out into the cold wintry night. Her mind consumed with what could have been………….
