Once again, Ryoma found himself walking through a cold winter's day on behalf of his senpai-tachi. Grumbling to himself under his breath, he trudged forward in the dark night, pulling his coat closer around him.
He still remembered what had happened on Christmas. It had been amusing to watch as the Seigaku tennis team steadily became increasingly rowdy. At least, it was amusing until Momo and Eiji decided to drag him into their mischief.
Needless to say, he did not enjoy being used as a human rope in their argument over who should get the last eel sushi.
Luckily, Fuji ate the sushi in question and Kawamura promised to make more just for the two loudly protesting teens.
He smirked into his scarf at the memory.
Looking up, he realized he was there. He drew aside the sliding door, pausing for a moment when he witnessed the scene inside.
Inui was offering something violet in a beer mug to a hissing Kaido while Eiji cried behind a flustered Oishi about the "slimy purple thing – it's going to eat me!" Fuji was laughing quietly in a corner as a blushing Kawamura looked off to the side, and Tezuka was glaring at everyone else, his arms crossed.
He was debating whether or not to enter when a pale Momo came from the hallway leading to the bathroom, took one look at him, and dragged him inside while loudly proclaiming his presence.
…there went his option of escaping.
But he ended up having a fun time fighting over sushi with Momo and Eiji, watching the Japanese countdown to midnight, and avoiding Inui and his colorful drinks – well, not really having fun avoiding Inui. It was a life-or-death situation to be evaded at all costs – especially to his complaining taste buds. They still had not recovered from the last drink…
But as the countdown drew closer, the commotion decreased until everyone sat still, watching the TV specially set up for the occasion.
A minute to go, Ryoma looked around the room. He ended up sitting between Fuji and Tezuka and across from the surprisingly silent Momo and Kaido who fought loudly more often than not. But everyone in the room was focused on the countdown.
"Saa…Echizen-kun." He turned towards the quiet voice, raising an eyebrow in question.
"Happy New Year."
He barely registered the sound of fireworks exploding from the television as his senpai-tachi cheered loudly. Shocked, he could only stare as Fuji kissed him on the stroke of midnight before pulling away with a smile.
"Do you not know, Echizen-kun? A New Year's kiss will ward off loneliness for the coming year."
He glared at his senpai before pulling him down for another quick kiss.
He smirked as Fuji's eyes opened, his right hand reaching up to touch his lips.
"You could have asked, Fuji-senpai."
Authoress's Note: I had planned to write this earlier, but I had to look up the tradition/superstition first to confirm what I had heard years ago. You can read a brief summary at the following site: www(dot)indobase(dot)com(slash)holidays(slash)new-year(slash)new-year-traditions(dot)html
On another note, this is a separate fanfiction from "Winter's Celebration" because I didn't want to combine a non-shounen-ai with this piece for readers who do not like FujiRyo or shounen-ai.
Happy Belated New Years!
