Fragments of stairs and arches hung suspended around her as she floated past them. Her feet made a soft pat as she landed on the stone walkway. Sarah looked around warily, eyes wide. A movement caught her attention and the Goblin King emerged from the shadows of an archway. He stepped forward, eyes fixed on hers.

"Give me the child"

Jareth circled her.

"Sarah, beware. I have been generous up 'til now, but I can be cruel."

"Generous?" disbelieving, sarcastic, Sarah cocked her head, "What have you done that's generous?"

"Everything!" Everything that you have wanted I have done. You asked the chid be taken, I took him; you cowered before me, I was frightening; I have reordered time, I have turned the world upside down, and I have done it all. for. you." Jareth paused, and his expression softened "I am exhausted from living up to your expectations of me. Isn't that generous?"

Sarah stared back, expressionless and unblinking.

"Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the Goblin City..." Sarah began to slowly walk towards the Goblin King "For my will is as strong as yours and my.."

"Stop!" Jareth held up a hand "Wait...look Sarah..." He offered up a crystal sphere "look what I'm offering you...your dreams..."

Still expressionless and unblinking, Sarah continued "...and my kingdom is as great..."

Jareth took a step backwards, he tried to reason with her, he had hoped it wouldn't come to this.

"I ask for so little. Just let me rule you and you can have everything that you want."

Sarah faltered, turned away. "My kingdom is as great...damn, I can never remember that line."

Jareth held the crystal sphere up again, hope creeping into his face.

"Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave..."

Sarah muttered to herself. "My kingdom is as great..my kingdom is as great...", then she looked up at the Goblin King triumphantly.

"You have no power over me!"

Jareth bared his pointed teeth. Sarah began to smile, elated with her victory. She could see Jareth throwing the crystal in defeat, turning into an owl and flying away...except...except that wasn't happening. Her smile faltered and she looked up at the Goblin King. His teeth were bared in a grin and his eyes glittered in a decidedly not defeated way. He waved a hand and the floating clock face appeared. She was too late. The few seconds of faltering had cost her everything. Jareth slowly walked towards her. He smiled softly and his eyes half closed in anticipation of things to come.

"Funny thing you should mention that, Sarah, because I rather think I do."
