She had waited until he closed the door to jump down off of her bed. The covers rustled behind her as she heard her footsteps on the plush carpet. Her tiny hand took hold of the doorknob to quickly yank it back open, hoping to scare or put a smile on her friends face.

"Boo!"

In the dark of the night the only thing she could see, was her clothes neatly hung up on hangers, some boxes that had been stacked in there since she could remember, and some toys that laid lifeless on the floor. Her heart broke in that instant and she crawled back into bed, sniffling as the tears comforted her to sleep.

Her 6th birthday had rolled around. She had drawn pictures of her Kitty over and over. Her mother eventually told her that imaginary friends aren't for big girls.

"I know that, imaginary friends are dumb." She told her mother as she fiddled with the doll in her hands. Her mothers loving touched brushed the comb through her long brown hair once more.

"Then why keep bringing up that mons-Kitty?" She corrected herself. Ms. Gibbs had made the mistake of calling her daughters 'kitty' a monster before. She had seen a real monster herself that day.

"Because mommy, he's real! Kitty is real! Grown ups can't see them and he doesn't like them anyways. He thinks you'll get scared of him." Mary had said this in such a grown up way that her mother almost was convinced, until she put down the comb.

"Mary. You're six years old now. The time for imaginary friends are over. You need actual friends." She picked up the doll out of her daughters hands. The plastic clattered as she walked over to the door. "You need to grow up sweetie..." Mary's eyes were blinking tears slowly back as she roamed over her mother in the door. Ms. Gibbs looked at the monster doll she had in her hands. Mary had begged, practically broke down for it. It was now crudely painted a light blue with odd purple spots instead of the red, black and gray it had originally been. She looked up at Mary sitting on the edge of her bed, then down at the visage of her daughters 'kitty' one last time before letting it fall into the trashcan.

About a month later, after Mary had come to the terms that her mother, nor anyone for that matter would ever believe her about Kitty, she had quietly cried herself to sleep. It was a mostly restless sleep since she still dreamt about her friend. She tossed and turned as she half conscientiously listened to the rain drops bomb her windows until a creaking noise pulled her from her half sleep daze.

After being in actually monster company there was really nothing that could scare her anymore. So she sat up and rubbed her eyes while looking around her room. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, except... She squinted her eyes and pulled the sheets back from around her legs. Did her closet door seem open? Maybe it was just the shadows of the rain...but her mom did shut it every night and make a habit of telling her not to open it until morning. Slowly she found herself crawling to the edge of the bed. Then it happened. She saw the closet door open, just ever so slightly. She found her breath catch in her throat, not out of fear, but out of anticipation.

The door squeaked open more and more until a big familiar blue arm, with odd purple spots was holding the other side of the doorknob.

"Kitty?" She could barely hold in her excitement.

There standing in the doorway was her Kitty. And he was smiling right back at her.

"Hi Boo!".
