"Eh, you think you can go to the movies with me tonight?" asked Dallas as he took a drag on his cigarette. His voice seemed dull, but not in a bad way. It was just how he hid his emotions. He was tough like that, and that was another thing Johnny liked about him.
"Sure. Who else's goin'?" Johnny answered back quickly. He'd spend as much time with Dallas as he could. It was obvious that Johnny admired Dally, but no one ever thought of it as a romantic thing.
"I was thinkin' just us, but you can invite anyone you want. I'll see you at 5:30 in the lot, okay? I'll wait there for you." He smiled. It was one of those rare times where he would show his emotions. After all, he would only show his emotions to people he trusted, which was no one except for Johnny.
Although it seemed like an eternity to both of them, 5:30 finally came. Dallas was leaning against the rusty fence, smoking. Johnny scanned the lot and finally spotted him.
"Sorry if i was a lil' late. I spent a little too much time getting ready. I wanted to look my best, that's all.." Johnny mumbled as he looked down at the ground. He looked up to see Dally's reaction.
"It's okay, kid. Don't sweat it. You look pretty tuff all the time." he tried to change the subject. "The movie starts in fifteen minutes, let's go." Dallas didn't want to show his emotions too much; it wasn't Johnny's fault. He had been through a lot and learned that the easiest way for him to live was to be reserved and keep his emotions to himself. He wanted to show Johnny his emotions, though. He just didn't know what the best way was.
They walked together to the movies as the sun went down. Johnny put his hand by his side and opened it slightly. Without hesitating, Dally gently placed his hand with Johnny's. Soon, the only source of light was a beautiful gold and vibrant orange sunset and the dull street lights. They watched the sun go down as they exchanged glances of admiration and happiness. It was a nice feeling. It was a feeling that Johnny longed for. It was a feeling that Dallas had never felt, but he liked it. It just felt right.
They arrived to the movies just as the movie started. They took a seat in the back row since they were a bit late and the front-row seats were taken. Although they didn't get the best view, they enjoyed the time that they could spend together. Johnny laid his head down onto Dally's shoulder, and Dally put his arm around around him without even noticing what he was doing. Johnny felt protected. Dallas felt safe - like he could show all of his emotions at that moment. Even as the movie came to an end, they were still in the back row, comforted by each other in the moonlight.
"Good movie, right?" asked Johnny, still resting his head on Dally's shoulder.
"It was okay. I wasn't really payin' attention though.."
"Well what were you thinking of then? Eh, not gonna lie, I wasn't paying much attention either." Johnny replied curiously.
"Well, ah.." Dally paused. "... I was thinkin' of you. About how much I trust you, I guess." he muttered. This was one of the times in which he actually felt comfortable showing his emotions.
"Really?" Johnny said excitedly, not noticing the smile that had appeared upon his own face. He looked up at Dallas. He was smiling, too. "This might sound weird but.." Johnny leaned back onto Dally's shoulder again, "... I love you. I really do."
"I love you too, Johnnycake. I love you too." He said without hesitation as he looked down at Johnny. He meant it. He didn't mean it in a friendship way. Johnny and Dally loved each other in a way that was hard to describe, but it was definitely more than friendship.
"Thanks for the best first date ever." said Johnny as they exchanged quiet "I love you"s and dozed off in each other's embrace.
