TJ & Spinelli in Detention
As she opened the cafeteria door on her way out, Miss Finster turned to face the boy and girl who would spend that recess in detention.
'I hope you two are going to think about what you've done,' she said.
The doors swung closed, muffling Miss Finster's footsteps as she took the corridor to the playground. She saw Randall writing in his notebook. Maybe the boy would have something good to tell her. She didn't worry about Vince LaSalle, Mickey Blumberg, Gus Griswold, or Gretchen Grundler - without TJ Detweiler and Ashley Spinelli, those four children usually kept out of trouble.
TJ scuffed the floor with the toe of his trainer. Spinelli had her elbows on the table and was leaning forward, chin in her hands. The smell of dinner hung in the air, making TJ's stomach rumble.
'Maybe they left some slices of pizza out,' he said, looking to the kitchen door.
Spinelli glanced at the kitchen door. 'Nah. If they left anything, we'll be eating it tomorrow.' She went back to thinking about what would be on telly that night.
TJ put his head on the table, feeling the coolness against his hot skin. 'Right. I hate leftovers. They'll reheat the pizza so it's soggy, and reheated chips always taste like cardboard.'
He looked out of the window. Upside-Down Girl was on her bar, Swinger Girl was on her swing, King Freddie was on his throne atop Old Rusty. The Diggers were sitting on the edge of their latest hole, contemplating a coin they had found.
'Cornchip Girl's trading her sandwiches to Hustler Kid,' Spinelli said, because it was all she could think of saying.
'I thought being in sixth grade would be different,' TJ said. 'I feel like I did in fourth grade, and I felt like that in first and second grade.'
'It'll be different in high school,' Spinelli said.
Save for the humming of the fridges in the kitchens, the cafeteria was silent. Sounds from the playground were muffled by the double-glazed windows, which were closed because the air conditioning was on.
TJ found himself wondering whether high school really would be different. Would he and the gang remain friends all through high school? They had been friends since kindergarten. He had felt it would be that way forever, but then Gus came during fourth grade. Would someone new join their gang at high school - another new kid?
There would be a whole new set of playground rules to learn, though of course high school kids were far to superior to have a playground king. Bob, the old king, would be in eighth grade when TJ went to high school.
Spinelli's thoughts were along different lines. She often heard high school girls when she roamed around town with the gang. High school girls were obsessed with boys, fashion, and music - topics which she found unimportant. She'd had a liking for TJ since they were in the first or second grade. She liked Vince and Mickey as well, and Gus, though she found him a bit irritating because he didn't like doing anything that could get him into trouble.
Would she and Gretchen suddenly develop an obsession with boys, fashion, and music? She hoped not. She hoped they would remain as they were - as they all were - forever.
TJ and Spinelli were startled by the door, and looked up to see Miss Finster coming toward them.
'Well,' she said. 'Recess finishes in two minutes. Did you think about what you'd done?'
'Yes Miss Finster,' they said.
'Good. Now go to the bathroom. I don't want you being late for lessons and saying I let you out after the bell.'
