Written for a dear friend to hopfully put a smile on her face. You know who you are :)

What am I doing?

This was the first thought that crossed the native princess's mind as she slipped out of her hut. On silent feet, she moved through the grounds of the village, making sure to keep a keen eye open for anything that might hinder her mission. Voices sounded in the distance and she halted, pressing herself against the wall of a nearby hut.

You're being foolish! Her mind screamed. They were no where near you!

Shaking her head at her impulsivity, she shrank back down and continued toward the where the cornfield bordered the village on the Western side. While not her ideal path, it would provide the quickest and clandestine exit. She could see the tall stalk looming before her, pointed toward the sly like green spears.

She was nearly there when her worst fear came true. "Pocahontas!"

She cringed at the sound of that voice, turning to see her best friend standing behind her, her dark eyes narrowed in suspicion. "Nakoma."

"What are you doing?"

"I…" She scrambled for the right words. "I have to go."

Nakoma sighed and dropped her hands to her sides. "You're going to meet him aren't you." When met with silence, she came forward, taking the other woman's hand. "Pocahontas, he's not one of them." Her eys grew pleading. "Think of your people."

How could she not? This was the whole reason she was doing this in the first place.

Liar.

Pocahontas bit her lip as the word entered her mind. Of course she cared about her people. She wouldn't be risking her life for them if she hadn't. Yet she couldn't deny she felt a strange connection to this odd stranger she had met only a few short days ago. His teasing smile from earlier that day came into the memory and she fought back a smile fo her own at the thought. She didn't know what the future held for them, but her heart couldn't help but feel lighter at the thought of him.

Turning back to Nakoma, she squared her shoulders. "I'm trying to help my people. Can't you see? If I don't, then who know what could happen?"

Her friend wasn't convinced. "Pocahontas, please! You're my best friend!" She sighed. "I just don't want to see you get hurt…"

'She smiled, sqeezing Nakoma's hand. "I won't" she promised. "I know what I'm doing." Turning, she threw one last smile over her shoulder, then stepped away

"Pocahontas!" Her name echoed on the wind through Nakoma's voice, but the princess didn't turn. There was too much at risk. Instead, she simply turned her back and fled into the cover of darkness.
