A Day In The Life Of A Youkai

Chap.1

I yawned, and sat up in my bed, daring to give a glance at the dragon in the bed across the room. Seeing him still asleep, I slowly stood up and made my way to the table. I yawned again. Why did I get up so early when Gojyo was alive again? I stared at the picture of Gojyo and me pinned on the wall. I could still hear his voice. Three thousand forty years after he dies, I still remember his voice.

"Hey, Hakkai. You wanna play a game of cards? I know you'll win, but…it'll keep me out of monk boy's hair, right?" He had joked. I couldn't believe I had actually cheerfully replied,

"Of course. I'd hate for the rest of you to match the color of your hair. Blood….while your hair looks nice that color, I don't think the rest of you would."

Growling, I picked up a knife and threw it at the picture. Upon reflection, red was a dumb color for hair. Especially for that idiot.

"Master Hakkai?" I heard the soft call of Jeep. He was up, with a pink tinge on his face, but up. Perhaps I didn't feed him enough beer last night. "It's a bit early for you to be regretting your friendship with Gojyo, don't you think?" He yawned, running a hand through his white hair, red eyes shining sleepily.

"Shut up, Jeep." I snapped. The dragon gave a sigh as he pulled on his shirt. I flicked my ears….pointed, fined out over the years. Claws gently stroked pointed ears. I frowned; was this worth it? Some pointed ears….some claws….

"Hoo boy. Look who's comin' to visit." Jeep's voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I peeked out the window, and grimaced. A sharp rap came at the door. Jeep eagerly answered it.

"Heh heh. Looks like Gonou's been feeding you liquor again, Jeep." I heard him a voice chime cheerfully. Jeep laughed and stepped aside to let our guest in.

The centipede stood there for a moment, simply staring at me. He had obviously updated his wardrobe to match the time period; now a grey hoodie and some somewhat faded khakis. But nothing could hide his pointed ears.

"Gonou!"

"Are you here to tell me something or are you just going to leave now, Chin Yisou? I'd really prefer the latter."

"Hm? Oh, I simply wanted to talk for a few minutes." Chin Yisou obviously didn't notice my distaste for him being there. "About…our reincarnations."

I knew about our reincarnation clearly. His were two kids, a boy named Teioh and a girl named Shi Tsu. The latter was more annoying, and she was always trying to find out why…well, why everything. Mine was a boy, same age as Shi Tsu, but named Hikaru. He loves explosives and potions, and is the inventor of the hover-board in his town.

"What about those brats?" I asked, easing into a chair.

"Good. You're sitting down." Chin Yisou sighed, before giving me the news. "You see, Hikaru and Shi Tsu are considering marriage in the next year or two. If they do just that…."

"What?"

"Are you aware of how the whole 'in-law' system works?" He asked.

"Of course. If a man's daughter marries a man, then the man's daughter's husband is the father's son-in-law." I replied with confidence.

"Yes. You see, basically, you work as a second father to Hikaru, correct?" I gave a nod. What was Chin Yisou getting at? "And I'm basically Shi Tsu's father, correct." Another nod. " So….were they to get married…"

"Get on with it."

"We'd be brothers-in-law."

The world went black. I knew I hit my head though….the rest is a blur.
