Deathly Hallows Spoilers.
What Snape was thinking about in his last moments.
He was dying.
It had all come to this. Duelling Professor's whom he'd once respected, and counted as friends. Even as they duelled, memories resurfaced. Sitting in the Great Hall, as it was announced his Potions Mark was the highest in the fifth year. Little sparks of happiness inside him as he saw Lily Evans clapping, and the smile he got from his Potions Master.
Flitwick awarding him ten points in his first year for a perfect Wingardium Leviosa. Professor McGonagall shaking his hand, and telling him to 'call her by her first name for heavens sake!' when he became the Potions Master.
Fleeing from a window, free falling like Dumbledore and pulling himself up with his wand.
Hearing McGonagall shout 'Coward!' after him. It hurt, it burned like a brand to know that Potter had told them, that he was going to die remembered only as the traitor coward who killed Albus Dumbledore. He fled to Voldemort's side.
The Dark Lord waited in the shrieking shack. Snape thought wistfully of his Pensieve, sitting in the Headmaster's office. Another thing forgotten in his haste to reach Ravenclaw tower before Voldemort. Now he would never have the chance to show anyone he was more than a sneaking, snivelling spy.
He would never see those green eyes again.
Snape watched the Dark Lord, watched the idea grow in his mind.
Watched his fate decided.
He was doomed.
Snape pleaded with Voldemort, although he was so washed with despair his Occlumens shields were breaking, and Lily Evans' face was swimming in his mind. His only friend, in a long lifetime.
The snake attacked, and then Lord and snake left the Death Eater to die alone. Blood poured out his mouth, out his nose and ears.
Severus Snape was dying, alone, as he had lived.
A ripple in the air.
Harry Potter appeared from nowhere. His face was dirty and streaked with sweat; there was blood on his clothes and hands. Severus had never been so happy to see anyone in his life.
The boy knelt down in front of him, and they met eyes.
His vision was fading. He could barely see the familiar and long detested likeness of James Potter. But he could those green eyes. And in them, he saw an expression that he'd never before seen on Harry Potter's face. Compassion.
He must know.
Severus let his memories go, let them pour out of him along with the blood. A blurry shape behind Harry handed him something, and Harry collected the memories in the flask.
As their eye contact broke, darkness fell for Severus, and he knew death was seconds away.
"Look…at… me."
Those green eyes found him again. They were the last thing he ever saw.
I loved Book 7. I really did. I was only hoping for a scene with Harry and Petunia, but Snape's memories did the trick. And Dudley realizing he cares for Harry was just great.
Thanks so much for the reviews of 'Love Conquers'
