Mello flinched as a hand landed on his shoulder and he had found the gun stuck behind his belt before he had even registered who it was. "Matt, what are you doing out here?" he relaxed knowing it was only Matt and not someone from the mafia.

"I was wondering where you had been all this time." Matt's expression gave nothing away and had Mello not known him he might have thought it had been a generic response. But Matt just didn't express things the way others did, never had.

"I was thinking... and watching the sky. The satellites look a lot like stars from here." the real stars were of course covered by the smoky gray clouds that hung overhead dumping water onto the earth below.

"You are going to get sick," Matt suddenly draped a jacket over his shoulders "then what would I do?" the smile Matt gave him was easy despite the utter sincerity of the words.

Mello had always been told he felt too much, too deeply, too eagerly. But with Matt it was enough, just enough to understand him.

"Then I will just have to stay." Matt's smile turned soft and Mello found that he couldn't look away. Tonight was a rarity, he always received the sarcastic smirks or the unaffected glances. This was real, this was what Matt hid behind his shield of games.

He sucked in a breath when Matt's fingers suddenly grazed his jaw, gloveless and soft. Matt's goggles were around his neck in half a second and he was leaning in with the next. All sounds stopped and Mello was transfixed on Matt and Matt alone.

Matt let loose a soft chuckle, breath ghosting across his lips before he kissed him. Mello felt it all in slow motion, frame by frame of something special that Matt had never allowed him before.

He struggled with his fluttering eyelids; he didn't want to miss a single flicker of emotion in those green orbs that stared at him so intently.

Mello kissed back, feeling bold, and was rewarded by Matt pulling him closer, holding him tightly. They had never kissed before, had been dancing around the lines of friendship for a long time, but had never kissed.

"I'm glad I found you out here." Matt spoke, lips just inches from his own. Mello nodded, unable to stop a smile from erupting.

"Watch the satellites with me Matt?" he asked when Matt pulled away. He missed the contact and suddenly felt the chill of the rain, but it was worth it with Matt's response.

"Always." Matt grabbed his hand and held it tightly, eyes turning skyward.
