How Divergent Happened

In the year 2111, the mayor of Chicago and one of Chicago's biggest government officials discussed how to fix a very important problem.

"The Cubs haven't won a World Series in a long time," said the mayor.

"What are we gonna do about it? They're cursed, okay? God just doesn't want them to win," The top government official ordered his third beer.

"I just wish there was a way we could make them win," The mayor said sadly as he ordered his fourth beer.

"What are we gonna do? Make it so that the Cubs are the only team in the league?" The government official laughed at his own joke.

"Oh my billy goat, that's it!" exclaimed the mayor. "We cut off Chicago from the rest of the world, and change Major League Baseball to Chicago League Baseball!"

"That's a stupid plan," mumbled the official. "What if someone inside Chicago makes a team and joins the league. They will beat the Cubs!"

"You're right. We will divide Chicago into five districts. Then the league will be the 1/5 of Chicago Baseball League."

"But there is still a chance the Cubs will lose to a team inside that district," said the official.

"We will promote selflessness in our region so no one would want to take away the title from us. We will call our district the Abington District, and name all the other districts after words that no one ever uses."

"Will the districts be isolated?"

"Of course," said the mayor.

"But what if someone wants to leave and live in another district?" asked the official.

"They can choose to leave when they are sixteen, but after that, they have to live in that district. Let's call them factions. We don't want to rip off the Hunger Games," The mayor smiled. He always had the answers.

"What if the faction doesn't want them?"

"Then they become hobos. After the 16 year olds choose their faction they have to pass some tests. If they fail, they become hobos."

"OH MY BILLY GOAT! THIS PLAN IS PERFECT!" The official shouted excitedly. Everyone in the bar stared at him, and he blushed. He shook the mayor's hand.

"And by the way, I am the city's dictator now," The mayor threw in on the way out.

The citizens of Chicago were so starved of a World Series victory that they overlooked the fact that Chicago was about to become 5 isolated districts that didn't trust each other and were shut out from the rest of the world. The next year, the cubs won their first Abnegation League Baseball Championship. 20 years after that, Beatrice was born.
