A very short little one-shot. Hope you enjoy it!
"Morning Hunt."
"Good morning, Shepherd", Owen said and synced in to Derek's pace as they walked towards the elevators from the entrance hall. "What have I missed?"
"You've been gone three days", Derek grinned. "You haven't missed anything."
They stepped into a waiting elevator and pressed the buttons for floor 4 and 5 respectively.
"I must have missed something", Owen said. "This place never stays quiet."
Derek silently had to agree.
"Well, the new head of peds arrived yesterday", he said. "Very peppy. Bailey hates her."
Owen chuckled.
"What's her name?" he asked.
"Robbins", Derek replied. "Arizona Robbins, I think."
"Robbins", Owen mused. "I feel like I recognize that name."
Derek shrugged.
"You've might have heard of her before."
"Maybe", Owen mumbled.
The elevator stopped on floor 4 and Derek stepped out.
"See you later, Hunt."
"Yeah."
The name Robbins flew out of his mind pretty soon, but every now and then, when he met Arizona or worked with her, it came back to bug him. It wasn't until Callie off-handedly mentioned that Arizona's brother had died fighting in Iraq, that he remembered.
The next day he found Arizona in a storage closet. She was looking through the shelves for something and hadn't heard him enter.
"Hello", he said to get her attention.
She jumped back slightly, with a startled expression on her face. But when she saw that it was just him she broke into a kind grin.
"Oh hi, dr Hunt", she said. "You scared me."
"I'm sorry", Owen said. "And please call me Owen."
If he were to bring up this topic she should at least be able to call him by his first name.
"Alright, Owen."
Owen stayed quiet for a moment and watched the blonde surgeon gather the things she needed. He didn't really know how to bring up the topic. In the end he just blurted it.
"Your brother was Timothy Robbins", he said.
He saw Arizona tense and stop what she was doing. She turned toward him with an expression he couldn't read.
"Yes…?" she said.
"I met him", Owen said. "In Iraq. I was working his area as a surgeon and I met him ones when he came to me with a bullet graze on his arm. It wasn't serious but he needed stitches…"
Owen looked at Arizona to see if she wanted him to stop talking but she was completely still and completely quiet. He took that as an invitation to continue.
"He was nice. A kind soul. Good soldier. He never complained about pain, but smiled and thanked me. I met him a handful of brief times after that."
He took a breath before continuing.
"I was there when he died. It was bad. We didn't have enough doctors and there had been an attack. Many were wounded. We manage to save many lives but… not everyone. I know your brother told doctors to help some of the others first. He was an honorable man. And I… I just wanted you to know that. That I knew he was a good man."
Arizona continued watching him with her teary blue eyes. He managed to meet her gaze.
"Thank you", her voice was low, but he heard her fine. "He was a good man. A good brother. Thank you for telling me."
"My pleasure."
She smiled at him. It was a sad but not fake smile. He returned it.
