Piers Nivans eyed the girl in front of before turning his attention to his captain, Chris Redfield.
"How old is she again?"
"She's eighteen," the girl cut in bitterly. "And she has a name."
"Piers, this is Amanda Bates. One of our best. She's been dealing with this shit since she was fourteen years old," Chris said.
The girl smirked, crossing her arms. "Honor to serve with you, Mr. Nivans."
The brown-haired man scowled. "Call me Piers."
"I will call you whatever I please," Amanda said in an almost-taunting voice. "Besides, I have this formality thing; you wouldn't understand."
"I understand perfectly." Piers turned around to walk away, but the persistent girl regained his attention with: "Oh, and if you ever call me Amy, I'll shoot you in the face."
"And why is that?" Piers asked, looking back over his shoulder at her.
Her smug expression fell into one of sadness. "I had a friend named Amy. She died."
"Sorry to hear." And Piers kept walking, leaving Amanda and Chris to catch up.
"Well, he's a keeper..."
Chris smiled, shocking Amanda. "You get used to him. So, how was England?"
"Home sweet home," Amanda answered. "Aunt Petunia was happy to have me—surprise, surprise."
"Why is that a surprise?" Chris asked.
"Aunt Petunia usually doesn't like me."
"Usually?"
"Yeah. It's 'cause I'm 'different.'"
"Well, different or not, you're still one of us. You're welcome to stay with me if you'd like."
"Thanks, Redfield. I'll think about it."
Amanda then marched off to find her cousin, Johnathan Michael.
"Hey, Amanda. I see you're finally back from England." John hugged her tightly. "How are Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon? And Dudley?"
"Ehh," Amanda said. "They're—you know—the Dursleys."
"So, the same?"
"Yeah."
"How's Zoey been?" Amanda wondered aloud.
"She's been good. She's currently trying to finish exams," John answered.
"And here we are fighting bioterrorism... I wish I could go back to school without people staring and whispering about my battle scars..."
John nodded, "I know what you mean. I'm glad I cut my hair, otherwise people would call me 'emo.'"
"That'd be a pity..." Amanda mumbled, lowering her eyes to the floor.
John put his hand on her shoulder. Although they were cousins, they were different in some ways. Amanda had brown hair like her dad and ice-blue eyes like their grandmother, while John had black hair like his dad and green eyes like his mum. John was tall—6' 5"—while Amanda was an average 5' 6"; he was muscular, and her frame was slim—concealing the strength that everyone she had ever fought or trained with knew about.
Also, while John was seemingly mentally stable, Amanda had social anxiety and major depression and was emotionally unstable. They both had ADHD and Dyslexia, but Amanda had improved her Dyslexia.
"COME ON, EVERYONE, MOVE OUT!"
Chris's voice startled Amanda and John into action. They joined their squad in the armory and got their weapons before finding Chris and Piers.
"Redfield! Nivans! What's the deal?" Amanda asked as she ran up to the two men.
"We got a call that Neo-Umbrella is forming a C-virus," Chris said.
"And we're moving into action immediately," Piers added.
Amanda nodded, and when Chris gave his final order, she and John—along with Chris and Piers—ran to their vehicles to move out.
And Amanda impressed Piers with her skills.
(First chapter, yay! I'm pretty proud of this chapter... Anyways, next chapter is Edonia (RIP Finn ❤)...)
