"Sher—" The mechanical *beep* of a call ending cut him off in the middle of my name. I dropped the phone back onto the rooftop and stepped to the edge of the roof. A glint in the window of the building across from the hospital caught my eye; a gunman had a rifle pointed at John. I had to save them. I looked down at John one last time, then closed my eyes, leaned forward… and fell.
Suspended in space, time seemed to stop. I heard John yell my name again, but it sounded far away, in a different world. The cold air around me began to alight with memories; the Christmas Mum gave me my first magnifying glass, my first case, Mycroft and myself reading on rainy days, meeting John. Memory after painful memory of all the people I was saving whizzed by as time began to return to normal speed. Molly laughing at my jokes (though I knew she didn't get them), the 'study in pink', teaching Irene Adler to play "Sound of an Angel" on the violin; all the memories were whisking by too fast now.
A tear drop hit the pavement.
… And so did I.
