Prologue

This was fair, he supposed, in the strange, roundabout sense of justice that Anubis seemed to deal them.

Fair that it would be him.

Fair that it would be here.

Fair that this is how their journey wound up; back where they started.

He looked backwards once more, thinking of those he'd left behind tonight. His closest friends who at various times had been his worst enemies. Yet here they were, still, following him on this doomed mission he'd become obsessed with, one that had twisted his mind until the prize that lay just moments away had consumed him.

It would all lead to here, wouldn't it, he thought bitterly. To this godforsaken house they'd never truly escape, even when they'd thought stepping foot out of the great wooden door for the last time might mean their freedom.

Narrowing his eyes, he steeled himself, and turned to face the statue before him, his face equally stony.

It was time to end this.

"Let's play," he said coldly, and there was a scraping sound as the floor beneath him came to life.

A game of life or death, once more.
