WARPED ITS CODE

Derek had always thought of machines as just that, a machine. A construct built of cold metal and unfeeling plastic. Perhaps the parts could be covered up with flesh and blood but what was underneath could never, unlike their programming, be changed. That Sarah and John could treat the machine they called Cameron like another human being did not sit well with him. He knew what happened to those that grew complacent, had ground that lesson into his mind so he could never forget the inhuman destruction human vanity could bring. He kept a suspicious eye on this one and since he was the only one who did, that meant he got little sleep. Not good for one in his condition. But life had taught him that it was only a matter of time before the machine turned on them, who knew if time travel warped its code? He would make sure they weren't caught off guard.

But it was Derek who was caught off guard when he heard the music and looked into the room. No one had told the machine to dance and there was no longer a need for it to return to the dancing school. But there it was, moving like nothing he'd ever seen before. If he hadn't known it wasn't a real girl, he would never have noticed the difference. It should have moved like a wind up doll, copying direction and angle to the unit without an ounce of understanding or interpretation. Instead, it moved as though it could hear the notes, know they were more than the vibration of molecules in the air. Like it could feel the flex and release of each movement it copied. He watched every graceful turn and soundless leap it made with something akin to shock and for the first time in his life, wondered if machines could perhaps become human after all.
