Vicki lives in a world of grey.
There is nothing there. No tones, no shades, no colors. There is just a solid expanse of grey, stretching out into endlessness.
She doesn't like this, she decides. This is nothing like the world she used to live in, none of it. She misses the world, misses the color and the vibrancy. Misses being alive.
She cannot get used to it, the solitude, the blankness, the void.
And then there is Jeremy. It's like the curtain has been lifted, and the plain grey canvas that was her existence now has color in it. She can see colors, suddenly she can see more than just the grey.
She loves it.
Jeremy is warmth and Jeremy is color. He seems surprised to see her, and when she calls out his name, she wonders if he can hear her. She doesn't care. She has the colors back.
But there's a haze, too. There's a thin veil, something separating her from the colors. Something is there between her and what she wants. She calls out to him, because maybe he can bring to her the colors she seeks. She can't tell whether he can hear her at all. He doesn't respond. Even to herself, her voice seems hollow, like an endless echo that no one can hear.
But there is something else too, something she does not recognize. It's white. Pure, brilliant, shining white. She doesn't like the white light. It's too bright for her eyes. It's too intense in its radiance.
She tries to avoid it, to keep it away.
She comes to Jeremy in flashes. At other times, it is like she doesn't exist anywhere, not even in her grey. She doesn't like her grey, though, so she thinks it might be alright. Living in color or not living at all.
And then the grey is here again. It is like she has been pushed away, but there she is again, slammed back into her empty world of grey.
Then there's a blackness joining her. She likes the black. It's dark and soothing, comforting. There is someone there, who, she cannot tell, but that someone tells her she can go back to the world, it would almost be as if she was alive.
There is a price to pay, but Vicki does not care. She can pay the price. But she can't stay here longer, she will go mad. She needs the colors.
The darkness is soothing. It is more than just the comfort that she can come back. It balances the bright white light that seems to shine brighter than ever, now.
The promises seem to feel duller, with lesser chances of happening. She can rarely ever go back to see Jeremy now, like he is pushing her out by force.
Suddenly there is color again, and there is light. There is everything she wanted. All she needs to do is get things right and she will be able to go back to the color. And not just the color, she will have all the smells, sounds and feelings of the world.
Matt can hear her.
Soon the grey will be gone.
