Diana looked at the clock that hung above the door. He was going to be there any minute. She surveyed her office; everything seemed to be in order. Her desk had been cleared, with all of her case files and paper work put in their respective places. After returning from Nina's office, she had logged off and shut down her computer. For about an hour, the light in her office had come from her laptop, desk lamp, and the light from the corridors outside her office.
Just moments before, she had closed the shades covering the windows and door that surrounded her office, allowing them total privacy. No one needed to know what was about to happen. It was their business and no one else's. There was no sense in adding to the rumor mill that ran rampant throughout the building. That's why they only did this at night; there was less of a chance of getting caught due to the lateness of the hour. The last thing she wanted was for anyone to find out. If they were discovered, both of their reputations would be at stake, and a tarnished reputation, however minor the blemish, was a difficult thing to repair.
Alone in the darkness and solitude of her office, Diana remembered the first time they had done this. It had been after a particularly bad case, and she had needed to feel a connection with someone…anyone. Somehow, he must have sensed this, and he came to her late that night. He wrapped his arms around her and held her tight and…
She was startled out of her thoughts by a knock at the door. He was here.
"Diana?" he said, as if asking for permission to enter.
"It's open," she called out to him, giving him the permission that he needed to enter the office and her private world.
He opened the door quietly, locking it as he stepped in. "Hey," he said with a smile trying to put her at ease.
"Hey," Diana said as she padded over to him. She had removed her shoes shortly after dropping off the diary to her boss, and she had neglected to put them back on. She liked feeling the cold of the floor against her bare feet. Standing before him barefooted, the height difference between them was more pronounced. She looked up at him, searching his eyes for some sort of apprehension…the same apprehension that she was feeling at the moment. She found none.
Looking into her eyes, he caressed her cheek gently, perfectly content for the next move to be hers. She wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her head on his shoulder, letting out a sigh of content as she felt his arms encircle her petite frame. Enveloped in his warm embrace, she felt a sense of security. She felt that as long as she remained like this, nothing bad could happen and the world would just go away and leave her at peace.
They stayed like that for a while in the stillness of the room, just holding each other, not saying a word.
"You okay?" he asked, finally breaking the silence.
She looked up at him and gave a small smile, "I am now."
"Good," he said, kissing her forehead. Releasing her from his embrace, he gave her hand a reassuring squeeze before turning to leave.
"Thanks, Marco," she said.
He turned back and smiled. "Anytime."
