Lena walked into J'onn's unsure of how to act. Putting a smile on her face was painful but she had to. She had to fake it. She had to pretend like there was something to celebrate. She had to pretend that her world wasn't completely crushed. Because if she didn't pretend, she would break, and breaking just wasn't an option. Not for Lena Luther.
"I brought both red and white." She announces and puts them on the table. Looking at them all is hard, but especially Kara. Kara the woman who had stolen the Luther's heart, the one that Lena always thought would be there for her and never lie to her. It seemed impossible, if she hadn't seen it herself she wouldn't have believed Lex. Fucking Lex. Of course, the selfish bastard would use his last breath to break her heart.
She had been sitting there, playing games, for the better part of 2 hours when Kara suddenly looked over to her.
"Lena, while they play this next round, can I talk to you?" She asks with a worried look on her face.
"Oh, sure, Kara." Lena response, not really wanting to talk to her best friend… er Kara, alone. The look Alex gave Kara didn't go unnoticed to the hypersensitive Luther, as the two women stood up. It was like Alex was screaming at Kara asking what she was doing. Lena would like to know the same thing.
They both walk up stairs and out onto the balcony. Neither one of them very sure what to say to the other. Lena, unable to take the silence any longer spoke.
"Why?" Lena asked keeping her eyes looking out into the city. She couldn't look at Kara.
"Why what?" Kara asks, obviously confused.
"Why didn't you trust me?" Lena clarifies, still not looking into those beautiful blue eyes.
"Lena," Kara began but stopped, as if she was unsure what to say. Finally she sighed in understanding. "You know?"
"Say it." Lena demands, finally looking up. The tears streamed down her face and she didn't bother to hide it. "I need to hear you say it to me."
"Lena i…" Kara began.
"Say it, Kara! Tell me who you really are!" Lena yelled, the pain evident in her voice.
"Lena I wanted to tell you so bad. I was going to tell you on our way home from Kaznia. I just, I knew it would hurt you and I couldn't do it. I couldn't do that to you." Kara defends herself.
"That's such bullshit, Kara!" Lena spat. "If our relationship meant anything to you, you would have come clean with me. You would have trusted me enough to tell me who you were! Instead you've been laughing behind my back, pretending to actually give a fuck about me! But hey I guess what they say is true, keep your friends close and your enemies closer, right?"
"What? No, Lena it's not like that at all. It killed me not to be able to tell you the truth. To tell you that I really had been there in the times you needed me, both as Kara and Supergirl. I never wanted to hurt you. I know it's a poor excuse and I'm sorry but Lena you have to understand, I did this to protect you."
"Protect me? Kara I didn't need your protection! I needed your honesty and your friendship!" Lena was now glaring at the Kryptonian. "It wouldn't have changed anything for me, I would still have lov…"
Lena stopped, suddenly aware of what she was about to say.
"If you think I would have acted differently with you because you're an alien, you clearly never knew me."
Kara stood there stunned, as she too realized what word Lena was about to say. She felt the crack in her grow with each word, as it punched into her mind and heart.
"Lena…" Kara began but couldn't seem to form words.
"It should have come from you, Kara. Not my brother, you!" Lena spat. "I trusted you with more then I've ever trusted anyone else and you lied to me, everyday!"
"I… I don't have any excuses for what I did. Nothing I say will make up for me not telling you the truth and for that I am incredibly sorry." Kara's tears were become uncontrollable. "But Lena, I love you. Okay, I love you and I couldn't lose you! I always intended to tell you but without even realizing it, time had flown by and it only seemed like it would turn out like this, with you mad and me losing your trust, but Lena, I'm in love with you and I can't lose you! Please, I can't."
Lena stared at Kara. She hadn't expected the love confession. It was something she had been waiting a long time to hear from the reporter but still, this didn't change what's been done.
"Kara, I love you too." Lena says but keeps her distance. "But that doesn't change anything. You couldn't trust me. How could I be in a relationship with someone who kept such a huge piece of themselves from me? I can barely look at you right now without feeling like I'd just been punched in the gut, and you were the one that delivered the blow."
Lena brushed the tears from her eyes. "Goodbye Kara."
"Lena, wait." Kara's hand flew out and landed on Lena's arm, stopping her from continuing to walk away.
"Don't worry, I'm not going to tell anyone." Lena spat bitterly.
"Lena I don't care about that!" Kara shouted. "I care about you! I can't do this without you! Please, don't give up on this, on us. Please give me a chance to make this right."
"That's the sad part, Kara. If you had just told me the truth at the beginning, we would have had a chance." Lena says, this time the anger is gone and replacing it is sadness.
Kara had no idea what to say, so she stood there, and watched as the best thing in her life, walked out of her life.
That's the sad part, Kara. If you had just told me the truth at the beginning, we would have had a chance.
That's the sad part…
With that line, the Woman of Steel, broke.
