Pokemon Adventures: Kanto League
Road to Pewter City Arc
Chapter 1 – First Steps
"Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the 2018 Kanto League finals!" Boomed Mr. Goodshow, to the erupting crowd. "All the hardwork, the preservation, all the sacrifices all comes down to this final match. Without further ado, lets welcome our finalists!"
The camera pans across the crowd, all cheering and stomping their feets. The noise was incredible and deafening. As the camera pans down towards the field, the crowd quiets down as Mr. Goodshow introduce the competitors.
"Hailing from Fuschia City, welcome newcomer Kyle Anderson. We have watched him dominate the league. In fact, we have only seen 3 of his Pokemon. His opponent is Liam Mulow, a resident of Saffron City. He stumbled in the beginning but he has caught fire in the recent rounds. Folks, this will surely be an incredible finals. The final match commence!"
With the referee giving a nod between the two trainers, the both summoned their first Pokemon. Kyle brought out his fearsome Tauros, who roared towards the crowd. His competitor, Liam, brought out his fearful Nidoking, slamming his feet on the ground, causing the staduim to rumble.
"Kyle brings out his Tauros. Liam counters with an equally dominating Nidoking. Folks, this looks like it will be a full attackfest..."
Suddenly, the TV was muted, and a blonde haired teen turned towards his mother with a look.
"Mom, we were watching that," he protested as he gestured towards his brother and father.
"I know dear, but I wanted to make sure you are ready for tomorrow," she responded, sitting down on the couch.
"My bag is packed and sitting on the floor, my letter for Professor Oak is on my desk and my clothes are sitting on my chair, waiting for me to put them on," Phil replied, turning towards his parents.
"That's my boy," Randy boasted with pride. He was sitting in a lazy boy, watching the match on TV. He was a retired firefighter. With Liz, he moved his family to just outside of Pallet Town and opened a daycare.
"What about what starter you want?" Mike asked, not straying from the action packed match.
"You will just have to see tomorrow," Phil answered cheekily. He tuned back into the match as Kyle's Tauros KO's Nidoking.
"Would you look at that folks? Not even Nidoking can stand against the Raging Bull. Can any of Liam's Pokemon stand a chance?"Mr. Goodshow bellows into the mic, making his voice boom throughout the arena. "Liam's second Pokemon is a Charizard. Guess he wants to attack at range, which seems like a good strategy at this time..."
Liz got up from the table and went to retrieve a box. She places it gently on the table, and with a nod between her and Randy, she cleared her throat.
"Phil, can you come here for a moment please?" She asks her son, with a little waver in her voice.
Curious, Phil got up and approached the table, eyeing the box with curiosity. "What's up Mom?"
"This belonged to my brother. When he started his journey, he found it traveling and kept it. He said it gave him luck in his travels and he wanted to give to you," Liz faltered for a moment, a tear shedding in her eye as she hands Phil the box. "He never did tell me where he got it, but in honor of him, may this bring you good fortunes in your travels."
Phil took the box gently, noticing how everyone was looking at him (even Mike who have momentarily forgotten the match). With a small breath, he gently opens the lid and takes out a gorgeous, talisman. As he held it, he noticed how the design was a water droplet. It was hung on a silver chain.
Phil looked up and without saying a word, he hugged his mom tightly. No words were said but none were needed. Everyone knew what that moment meant. As he pulled away from the hug, he turned to the TV and watched as Kyle's Tauros was finally defeated.
"Holy Moly. Charizard finally brings down Tauros with a very powerful flamethrower. Liam sure isn't backing down," Mr. Goodshow shouts with the camera getting a confident looking Liam in a shot. "What will Kyle's next Pokemon be?"
"So Phil, do you already have a route planned out?" Randy asks, sitting down at the table and brings out a town map.
"Nope," Phil replies, looking at the map as well. "I was going to wait and see where my feet take me."
"That's fine," Liz smiled at her son. "I do suggest you head to Viridian City and you can decide there. I believe Saffron is still closed right now."
"How come?" Phil asks.
"Sounds like Team Rocket has restarted their gang. They are in an all out war and retook Saffron as their base," Randy replied. "But who knows, maybe they might be gone by the time you get there."
"Holy shit!" Mike exclaimed excitedly at the TV.
"Mike! Watch your language!" chided Liz but they returned their attention to the match.
"Kyle sent out a Snorlax against Liam's Charizard. Somehow, Snorlax was able to use belly drum, smack down and finished with high horsepower and just knocked out Charizard in a few moments. You don't see that strategy a lot. It seems like Kyle is battling on a whole different level then Liam," Mr. Goodshow announces to the excited crowd. "Lets see what Liam will send out next."
Liam sends out a Jolteon. As soon as her paws hit the ground, she bounded towards Snorlax with incredible speed and sank her fangs into his arm, sending electricity into it. It did some damage but with Snorlax's increased attack power, it landed a super effective high horsepower, knocking out Jolteon in one swift counterattack. With that, a buzzer sounded.
"Well folks, we will take a 10 minute intermission and allow our trainers to catch their breaths. For Kyle, this will allow him to try and keep the momentum up. For Liam, this will be a chance to recollect himself and see if he can pull himself out of the hole. Either way, we are in for a heck of a finish. We will be right back folks."
With that, commercials started to play on TV. There was one announcing the start of the 2019 Kanto League (which sign ups start tomorrow), it shows that Karrie will perform at the half time show for the Finals as well as Jay will be opening up the ceremony. Another commercial shows that Fushia City will host the first ever Mantine Surfing Competition in Kanto (with more details later). Finally, it showed Professor Oak's reminder that new trainers can come to Pallet Town tomorrow and receive their first Pokemon.
The match resumed. Liam made every attempt at a comeback but Kyle was just too strong. He had become the 2018 Kanto League Champion and will take on the Elite Four in a couple of weeks.
As the match concluded, Phil stretched and got up. He hugged his parents, waved to his brothers and said goodnight as he went to bed.
The next morning, he was up at the crack of dawn and was the first one at Professor Oak's lab with unbound energy.
"Good morning Phil," Professor Oak smiled warmly at the new trainer. "I can see you are excited to start, so if you will, follow me."
Professor Oak lead him through the famous lab. He lead him past a few rooms doing research, past the door leading outside to the field (where multiple Pokemon are playing, sleeping etc) and finally to the back of the lab with Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur are sitting on a table, eating.
"I won't drag this out any farther," Oak said with a smile. "Phil, who do you pick?"
"I choose Squirtle," Phil immediately answered. With a shout of joy, Squirtle jumped onto Phil's back.
