She lets out a yell of victory, a loud, joyous sound just bubbling out of her throat like laughter. "Yes!" Amy punches the air, whirls around in the air, golden strands of hair floating around her head like a halo. "We did it! He went down, boom, defeated! We win!"
"That's how you do it!" Sonic agrees, voice somehow carrying over the acres of nothing but darkness. They're two glowing dots against the night sky, a pillar of smoke rising from their defeated foe lying there far, far below – we did it! "You were amazing, Amy." And then Sonic says that, smiling at her – and the distance is suddenly too great, so she thinks about it, and zaps over to where he is like a golden streak.
"We did it," wasn't what she planned to say now, but it spills out, words suddenly turning soft at his proximity. "We did it, together."
He looks at her then, another one of those hundreds of looks she's almost caught him giving her, that wistful something when he does that kind of smile, and something just flares up inside of her. Anger? Determination? It's just – they've fought, she's been stupid, he's been avoiding her, she's never got what she wanted – he never even admitted that he wanted it too. Now, now he looks at her like that again, and something cracks in Amy's chest—
She grabs his arm and kisses him, their noses collide, so next she's tilting her head. And Sonic, is just, paralysed. Frozen terribly still; so she kisses him, thinks this is it, the end, I don't— and then snaps into motion again, finally, and she thinks that even if it isn't rejection her heart's going to break…
They kiss. He kisses her back, and they kiss with the intensity of five years of nothing, of waiting, of maybes, and her heart does break – but that's only so it can finally piece itself back together, all the bits fitting in, at last. When they break for air, she starts laughing (getting no oxygen, hey) and Sonic does too, so when Tails finally catches up with the Tornado IV, they're both clinging to each other, out of breath, and cackling like fools…
"I take it you're both alright?" he asks, eyebrow raised.
"Tails," wheezes Sonic. "We're better than alright. We're better than we've been in ages."
