"James! Don't go!" I pulled at the sleeve of his jacket frantically.
"Sarah, I have to go. I must fight for my country."
"But James," I was close to tears now, "there is no possibility Father will approve of you and have us be married if you run off and join the army!"
"Sarah, please understand! You father will never approve of me as long as I am a patriot. You know that!"
James pulled me into a tight embrace. He let go and softly kissed my hand.
"I will be back, Sarah. You know I will." He smiled softly and let go of my hand. James walked into the night, not looking back.
I sank to the ground, not caring about my dress, and let loose a fresh wave of tears. As he disappeared into the moonlight, I clutched the gold locket he gave me and whispered, "Until I see you again-Goodbye, James."
