Bought in the greatest anticipation, I am the epitome of softness and strength. I was chosen out of dozens of others similar to me, was taken to the home-place, and presented as a surprise to relay the message. I was shown to everyone they know, and everyone expressed their joy. I was made to comfort and protect something small and soft.
I am the centerpiece of this room, where everything else must coordinate with my light colors. The couple comes in here, and touches upon my wooden beams, and comment on how smooth my pine framing is. I listen patiently as the woman sits in here with me, tracing her fingers absently along the flannel-covered foam and soft cotton blankets as she tells me all of her hopes and dreams. I am honored to be part of them.
Unable to speak or express myself or my sympathies, Izumi will never hear my sorrow in knowing that there will be no baby for me, and I will remain an empty cradle.
